Vitamin K Supplementation Reduces Nocturnal Leg Cramps in Older Adults
Posted by: Speedy

No doubt there are a few older adults on the forum. I’m only 74 but even so I do get occasional leg cramps at night.

Vitamin K supplementation significantly reduced the frequency, intensity, and duration of nocturnal leg cramps in older adults. No adverse events related to vitamin K were identified.

METHODOLOGY:
Researchers conducted a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial in China from September 2022 to December 2023.

A total of 199 participants aged 65 years with at least two documented episodes of nocturnal leg cramps during a 2-week screening period were included.

Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 180 ? of vitamin K (menaquinone 7) or a placebo daily for 8 weeks.

The primary outcome was the mean number of nocturnal leg cramps per week, while secondary outcomes were the duration and severity of muscle cramps.

I'm in my 40s and get leg cramps at night. Wonder if this would help.

How much did they take?
120 mcg is the RDA.

The article is behind a paywall.

I get these too but it's partially because I get paralyzed by a sleeping cat.

Most people get enough K in their food. If you take it you need to be careful as too much can cause blood clots. It is beneficial for people with Osteoporosis but one of the Ks (K2 or K7) is better. I don't remember which one is preferred.

It does not.

I take it for other purposes.

I still get leg cramps. They have not gone down in frequency since I started those supplements.

I've found if I miss eating one banana for more than 3-4 days I will get a leg cramp. As long as I eat 1 a day or every other day I'm fine.

I too have found a banana or two a day or two has been helpful in dealing with leg cramps.

So has being hydrated.

Supplements would likely help me.

How much K is in a banana would be the question.

I like bananas, I just hate shopping.

It looks like banana chips may have just as good if not a better percentage of vitamin K

Be careful if you are on the blood thinner, warfarin, vitamin K counteracts and actually is what is used to reverse warfarin if you’re injured.
It appears that it is not counter indicative for Eliquis or other blood thinners like that.

As far as I've always understood it's the potassium in bananas that helps with leg cramps. I've been a banana a day person for decades.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to order some Vitamin K-2 Menaquinone-7 again.

I'm trying to strengthen my bones but not use the commercial pharma drugs. (Something about their warning of femur fractures throws me off; I've already had one of those.) My understanding is that the K-2 Menaquinone-7 sends calcium supplements to the bones instead of lining arteries, I am game for that.

I like that!

Bananas are enjoyable, but I don't shop often enough to keep them in supply before some go bad.

And no I don't make banana bread or pudding.

So once they're too ripe to throw into my Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes, or tub shot glass of vanilla ice cream, they're binned.

So I'll give chips a try.

Get a hand-blender.

Toss a soft banana in a tall mug, splash some milk in, maybe some blueberries if you've got 'em. Blend for 30 seconds.

That's breakfast.

I cut most of the stems off my bananas and wrap the bananas individually in plastic wrap (wax paper is not air-tight) and store them in the refrigerator. They last a long time (a week or more), and the plastic wraps can be reused quite a few times before needing to be replaced. LyleH

That's breakfast.

That's a great idea, thank you.

I'll give that a shot, too.

Thank you as well.

I don't get leg cramps at all, but I adore bananas and eat about one a day.

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned that they freeze really well ... just peel, cut into 1 inch slices, and throw the slices into a Ziploc bag in the freezer. Thaw and use for smoothies, or can even just go on top of cereal. They will eventually brown in the freezer, but if they do, can still be used for banana bread and such... and if the browning is bothersome, add a little bit of lemon juice to the bag prior to freezing.
