I had the same thought but apparently that doesn't work for a desktop machine without a battery. There are issues with USB-C power supply to a computer where the power draw is inconsistent and can rapidly spike - for example when gaming or running other CPU and graphics intensive tasks. When you've got a battery in a laptop that can be used to offset unexpected voltage draws from the hardware, but without the battery the operational equivalent of a brownout would dramatically impact performance or corrupting data if not outright crash the machine.

However, with that said, when you're Apple, and you've already got loads of partially expended batteries around, and you've made your new desktop so small... it seems like for a very marginal cost you could add that battery backup and the power delivery components to make a really great solution.

I dislike wall adapters as the majority block adjacent outlets making them useless.

I don't remember when they started, my 2010 mini was the my first without an external power supply.

Given the size of the previous power supplies, it's really impressive they've kept it in the mini ever since, and especially with the m4.

Honestly, the mini is so good I can’t imagine complaining. They really had no great reason to put it out, and yet they did. If there is a selfish motive, it’s looking long-term to pull in more desktop users, which is an admirable way to do business at least in this age of short-term optimization. To actually add value to a product line to attract users? That’s weird nowadays. Most things are just cheap, cheap, cheap, hype, hype hype.

I went from a Mac Pro (the ginormous tower from the 00s) to 27" iMacs to Mac Studios. I bought a couple Mac minis for the wife and kids, but never ever considered using one as my primary work machine. However, with the M4 mini release, I feel comfortable replacing the Mac Studio with a mini knowing that the mini is actually the more powerful machine for my purposes. I wish the mini had a few more Thunderbolt ports, but I realize that an OWC Thunderbolt dock is more than enough to make up for that deficiency.
