Looking for a firewire extension cable, male to female
Posted by: tuqqer

This should be so obvious, but I can't find one.

My iSight is too far from my G5, so I need a firewire extension (male to female), 6 feet will do.

I'm having a helluva time finding one. I see these around on eBay

...but I've had one and they're really cheap and actually short out my G5, causing it to quit instantly. And that female end is just ridiculously big.

Anyone know a link to a high quality one?

A quick search on google turned up a bunch of 15 ft male to female 6 and 4 pin cables, but they ran around $30 dollars. For that price would it be easier to just by a 15 ft cable for $6-$7 and forget the extension?

I buy about all my cables from these folks. They're fast and trouble-free so far.

Wish I could. My iSight is plugged into an iFlex, and their firewire cable is sealed into the base.

I asked the person at the ebay store, and they said no luck.

I'm searching pccables now...

Tuqqer, I just bought a FireWire coupler 6 pin F to F, just use regular FireWire cables and plug them together. Radio Shack used to carry them, bought four for $3.75 each. Must've been a closeout sale.

That's just what I needed to hear, BGnR. Didn't know they existed, and I already have plenty of regular FW cables. Thanks, man.

2-1-06:
Ok, after finally calling the manufacturer of the iSight MacFlex, and asking how to extend the length of their firewire cable, they said the only sure way of keeping a signal strong is with a Firewire Repeater, such as this one from Belkin:

They said that any non powered extensions will generally drop signal and not work after awhile. In any case, I bought one from Amazon. Hopefully it'll do the job.
