Which Ring Door Bell?

I'm going to check the voltages on my current doorbell and if it's good to go I will be grabbing a wired doorbell. Does anyone have a "newer model"? I'm assuming I want at least a "plus" but should consider the 'pro'

There is a "compare" link on that page.

If you have existing hardwired chime(s), then make sure you get a model that's compatible. I didn't realize the lower end ones don't work with regular hardwired chimes when I installed one for a friend.

At my previous place, I used the Wired Doorbell Pro and later switched to the Battery Doorbell Pro (because I had a wiring issue that took me a while to figure out). Another part of my wiring issue meant that I never managed to get them to work correctly with the 2 chimes that were hardwired, so I ended up just going with Ring plug in chimes (which can be more helpful because you can have different alerts for different circumstances, i.e. doorbell pressed vs someone just standing in front of the camera for a while).

It looks like the Pro gives you package alerts over of the Plus, if that's important to you. Although, if you're not already in the Ring ecosystem, there are "dual camera" doorbells (Eufy has some) that have a separate camera for the ground so you can see packages.

I think it mostly comes down to price sensitivity.

I went with the pro because I wanted wired and the highest resolution available.

Everybody thinks "I got it on camera!" will be useful until you realize that the ability to resolve fine details requires perfect conditions. Higher res helps close the gap.

We bought a battery Ring 15 months ago for a location that has hard wires from a transformer. I hooked them up and it trickle charges the battery in the Ring doorbell. I just looked at the battery and it is at 100%. It was on sale for $70 when we got it. It does ring the regular house bell and we get the package notification thing. We have a Ring security system and the Ring doorbell subscription is rolled into the yearly cost of the whole system.

I was first aimed at the wired doorbells because I didn't want to mess with recharging a battery. But, the battery doorbells have this under the tech specs:

"Runs on a built-in, rechargeable battery. Can be hardwired to an existing doorbell system or transformer for continuous charging (8-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz). No halogen or garden-lighting transformers; no DC transformer/power supply."

They sort of make it a secret that the battery Rings can be hardwired because I don't see anything in the regular description information about it. But it works fine hooked up to the existing wires.

Does Ring work at all without a subscription?

"Ring devices don’t require a Ring subscription. Without a subscription, you can view real-time video for Ring doorbells and security cameras and answer doorbell notifications as they happen." (You don't get recordings)

Like Michael, I originally had Ring cameras that trickle charged the internal batteries from the existing transformer wiring. They worked 90% (or better) of the time….but I live in a locale that gets cold for part of the winter, and I found that on “really cold” nights the trickle charge from the transformer couldn’t keep up with the power consumption/ambient temperature loss and the cameras would drop for a few hours overnight. May not be an issue depending on your locale.

My solution was that about a year later I replaced the doors and while doing so, I fished Cat5e cabling into the door frame area and upgraded to Ring Elite doorbells that have hardwired network connections and are powered by PoE.

I like the Ring Peephole Doorbell, since it is in the perfect viewing spot. The battery easily slips out inside to charge.

I have the regular wired Ring doorbell. I did not realize that the battery ones can be wired as well. A did have to buy a Ring Chime as well, since this model does not work with the regular doorbell chime. I also never knew that the other models can use your original chime.
