When US companies (is there such a thing anymore?) make a car that last as long as my toyotas with mantainence costs equal - I'll look. Till then, I won't even consider it.

Hard not to agree with you Hal. Toyotas just go and go.

Case in point, Celica with over 200,000 miles and the original clutch. Just not possible with an American car.

cause american cars have more torque, which will kill a clutch.

That torque ain't (sic) much good when it's sittin' on the side of a road somewhere . . .

The really durable Saturn S series was taken off the market by the brains at GM just in time for $3/gallon gas.

My 1999 SW2 has 110K, has been trouble free and gets an actual 36mpg on the highway.

Well said about Toyotas above. They might cost you brakes, battery and alternator to get to 250K. They will then go to 500K if you change the oil once in a while; it may cost you an automatic tranny to get there-not always. That's been my experience with Toyotas.

U.S car owners brag like hell when they get to 150K(and it's cost a hulluva lot more)-as IF it's a big deal. All my In-Laws go through hell with their GM cars(sorta like PC owners)

One of the two men in that picture may not be around much longer.

Aside from that, what exactly is that point?

That GM/DCX is showing off concepts for systems that have yet to enter production? That even though they're late to the party, they will have a prettier dress when they finally arrive?

And, speaking as one who hasn't fallen for Toyota's masterful hybrid over-hype PR machine, do you really think that Toyota, the hybrid technology leader in the industry, doesn't have something similar, or even superior in the works? Honda and Toyota have already had more than one generation of hybrids for sale. Everyone else is just catching up.

Glad that DCX could salvage something from their Mitsubishi partnership with the Caliber.

LOL, that was a good one!

Funny thing is that I have a Brother in law that worked for Ford and all my new cars were Fords (Escorts) purchased through A-Plan discounts.

Usually they last about 5 or 6 years (usually a accident where it is not worth repairing and I wanted a new car) but I have replaced Clutches on both after 4 or 5 years and begin to show some "stress" with little mechanical things breaking or malfunctioning after about 3 or so years.

I currently bought a used Honda that was already 4 years and haven't had a problem yet after 2 years (going on 3).

Knock on wood.

i just bought a 1991 Geo Prizm, which is basically a Toyota Corolla. 69K miles, gets good gas mileage, though it is a bit on the small side of what i like to drive. $1500 cash for a no-frills A-B car.
