Living here in Southern California, with all the fires, there are no Air Purifiers on any shelfs. So I will order online.

Any recommendations?

In the meantime, get a twenty-inch box fan and duct tape a furnace filter to it. I've actually had this set up in my son's room for years.

Lots of youtube vids. Like this one:

And with a fairly high filtration rate. The one I use is MERV 13.

I have three of these and have been very happy with them. Looks like I got mine for about $150 but you might not be in a position to wait for a price drop.

Several years ago we went looking for an air purifier during hay fever season. Consumer Reports had as their highest rated large room air purifier the Blueair Blue 211.

I just looked and in the Jan issue they recommend the next iteration of it, the Blueair Blue 211+. We own 2 of the Blueair 211's and they're fine. I buy aftermarket filters that are way cheaper than OEM.

But Consumer Reports also recommends (with a slightly higher score) the Blueair Pure Blue 211I max. It's on sale right now at Amazon for $100 less than the previous one; I don't have any experience with it but I assume it would be fine.

We were happy enough with the Blueair's that we bought a much smaller one for my wife's craft room. It's the 411: [www.amazon.com] Again, it's fine.

1. Fastest: Tape a filter to a box fan, on the intake side.
2 More efficient: Tape four filters together, to form an open-ended cube. Close one end by taping cardboard to cover it. Tape the box fan to cover the other end. Set the cardboard end on the floor, with the fan on top.
3. Any of the commercial purifiers here are good for filtering particulates out of the air. Note that the more carbon they have, the better they are absorbing odors/chemicals from the air.
4. Long-term solution I'm using. Buy a a used Austin Air 400 (or comparable) on eBay, craigslist, etc. Should be about $100-200, + shipping, depending on which size you buy. Buy a new filter for about $200. These are good for about 5 years until you need to replace the filter-they have a ton of absorbent material, so they don't need to be replaced as often. You do need to vacuum off the outer filter once or twice a year. The only thing they don't have is ion emission-which we've found to be great for getting rid of cooking doors, especially after cooking lattkes. I bought one used 12 years ago, and it's never missed a beat. Here's an eBay link: [www.ebay.com]

Merv 13 is the minimum one should use for this scenario, HEPA level, I believe.

Doubling the surface area decreases the resistance for the fans.

Ask This Old House had a great episode on the box fan filter.

Surface area can be increased by using eight filters instead of four, making a 'two story' purifier.

Or using five filters instead of four, if pentagons don't freak you out.

Not as elegant or space efficient, but I'd do that if filtration is to be temporary, or long term if utilitarian is an ok look.

If one wants a more permanent solution, maybe a Wix, or whatever, a Molekule if one is posh.

I don't know what the furnace filter will for the smell of smoke.

Activated charcoal is used to eliminate odors, and the DIY box fans obviously don't have any.

I originally came across this idea years ago in looking for a smoke smell solution as there was a fire near a condo I owned. The box fan DIY was a solution proffered. Smoke smell is made up of tiny burnt particles of wood so maybe it does trap a significant portion of them.

That's likely correct.

I remember reading a Bosch book were Jerry Edger tells Bosch, upon examining some very bad decomp, that smell is particulate matter.

Bosch was not happy.

Not that I'd offer that example in court testimony, but I bet Connelly got that bit right.

Bosch:Legacy, Season 3 being it's last, is supposed to air in March.

Just sayin'.

Connelly is trying to make a go of a new series with his Renee Ballard character/ine, which wasn't so great in the books.

Annie Wersching would have been great in the role.

But I digressed.

We have the same Coway filter that Mattkime linked to. It works great and has gotten us through a couple of week-long extreme fire/smoke episodes.
