Need help with OWC Mercury Elite-AL 2 Bay FW800 OX912 enclosure

I'll give them a call in the morning, but figured I would ask here first.

I got one of these: [eshop.macsales.com]

Now I'm trying to set it up. I see by default it only does RAID0 and I have to update it in order to use it as two single drives. That's fine. I get my drives plugged in, hook up the enclosure and power it on. The drives spin up but nothing else happens.

So I figure I have to apply the update first. I download it and follow the instructions at [eshop.macsales.com] However, when I get to step 6, I get an error instead of the window they show there. The error I get is "Write to ADDITIONAL_CONFIG_DATA failed"

I see the enclosure connected in the system profiler, but I don't see it in Disk Utility.

Any ideas what I have to do to get this thing to work?

TIA

I connected it via FW400 (rather than FW800) and now I'm able to get a little farther. Now, however, when I click "Upload Changes" I get the message "The device doesn't have any configuration information to update."

So I discovered, even though the instructions lead one to believe it's okay to do this with drives installed, it actually only works (at least in this case) with the drives removed.

So I uploaded the config and even downloaded it and compared it to the single drives config to make sure it took. It's configured correctly.

I've reinstalled the drives, set one to master, one to CS, put the master on the end of the cable... but neither drive shows up.

Ahhh, the second drive doesn't work with cable select. Now it's working fine.

I wonder if the reason I couldn't get the config to update while the drives were connected, is because of the jumper setting.

The same exact thing happened to me with the same exact enclosure. I had no clue what a jumper was. Two CS calls to OWC later, I was on the right path. My two drives were different brands, so it still took a sec to figure out the right setup, but eventually I got it.

Glad it's working for you, too. smileys with beer

cs and master? can you do that?

i would assume both cs or master/slave, but not a mix

Should have been one master, one slave. EXCEPT.... if mixing and matching drives, especially WD drives - I've had nothing but trial and error solutions a few times. WD drives don't play nice with other brands on the same bus frequently. We used to run into that with G4 Cubes and optical drive upgrades.

Glad you got it working.

Good Luck!

That is exactly the problem I had when trying to mix a WD and a Seagate drive. The master/slave settings only worked one way (I don't remember which). Eventually, all the fumbling around worked, don't ask me how.

I've always done it Master and CS. It has worked fine in my PCs and previous Macs that way.

It'd be nice, however, if the information (as Cap'n Rusty pointed out) was part of the owners manual.
