Yep. I've noticed the tents are a bit more numerous than in previous years here in northern MI.

Back in the early nineties, our county was overrun with them. It was so bad that an extra tax was added for aerial spraying of the buggers.

BTW, nice link mstats. Some good info there.

We had them really bad for the last three years.
Especially in Wild Cherry and Apple trees.
I started cutting the wild cherry down around the house because of the green droppings.
They have population blooms, then a disase (fungus, mite, bacteria, whatever) drops their populations to almost nothing.
I don't see any yet this year, but I did go around to all the apple trees pulling all the egg casings off in the Winter.
They're either late, or it's going to be a wane year.

Nasty when they start crawling all over looking for a spot to cocoon-up.

Hornet spray works.
Flame thrower, but you got to be careful not to burn the tree.
I found they'd drop out of the nest with a little heat, right into a garbage can lid. Then full blast with the torch.

telepole (extension pole). tape a propane torch to the top. Do NOT do this on a dry/drought environment (you'll toast your tree a lot faster than these buggies will strip it).

I used to do that a lot at our old house. Long reach spraying (power washer with Sevin in it ) reaches the top of most trees.
