Apple® today updated its MacBook® Pro line of notebooks with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, memory up to 4GB, and high-speed graphics in a stunning, lightweight, aluminum enclosure that is just one-inch thin. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional high-resolution display. All models include a built-in iSight® video camera for video conferencing on-the-go, Apple’s MagSafe® Power Adapter that safely disconnects when under strain, and built-in 802.11n wireless networking for up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g.*

Where on the Apple site does it say the screens are LED? I can't find it, even at the "Compare" page... [store.apple.com]

thanks

I see no official mention of LED displays either. I think the press release blurb posted by BLeonard is in error, and it is being posted on several sites.

EDIT: found it in the press release, although Apple really went out of its way to downplay/hide this. Wonder why?

it says LED on Apple's pages.

"With Intel Core 2 Duo performance, more memory and state-of-the-art graphics, this MacBook Pro is a portable powerhouse for creative and professional users," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Apple's notebooks have always led the industry in innovation with features like built-in 802.11 and the MagSafe Power Adapter, and now the industry's first 15-inch LED-backlit display is another step toward completely eliminating mercury from our displays."

Display’s the thing

A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display.

The mention is very matter of fact.

There was an article on MacSlash yesterday about how Dell was going to beat Apple to the punch with the LED display....I guess that they were late to the party again.... sorry Dell.

MacSlash should have read ThinkSecret and maybe AppleInsider.

The "power efficient" LEDs don't seem to get much more battery life. 6 hr for the 15" vs 5.75 hr for the 17". Thickness is the same 1" for both models

the LEDs are meant to be better for the environment, not so much to save power.

I'm anxious to get a look at the new screens. There has been talk about how much better the color gamut is (or can be) from LED backlight. I'm not sure how much better if any it will be in real life but it should definitely be more uniform.

Unless there are problems with the first version (not unheard of for Apple ;)), I'm probably going to wish I didn't buy a new MBP a few months ago.

I think they're intended to serve both purposes.

I'd LOVE to get 6 hours battery life on my new 15" MBP -- I'm lucky to get half that.

Maybe they downplay the LED feature so it doesn't get noticed by 17" customers... though I gotta say wow to the 17" 1920x1200 (same as my 24" desktop display).

Battery life is such a variable that I'm not surprised that Apple didn't make that a selling point. At least I haven't read the ad copy so I don't *know* that they didn't.

I wonder how even the LED lighting will be.

1920 X 1200 for old fart eyes is a bit of a stretch, that's gotta be a feature for the young road warriors. nice bunch of upticks, not a total WOW! update/upgrade, but unfortunately enough to likely pull the trigger... was gonna/intended to get the last gen refurb when these puppies hit town for the July/Aug travels, but damn, this is just enough to go new, and maybe sell off some old stuff to make up the $500 difference...
thanks Apple, we needed that.

The display on my work Dell Latitude D820 laptop uses this resolution. My 42 year old eyes are coping well, but it was an adjustment at first. Nice being able to see so much on screen, I gotta say.

N-OS X-tasy!-- Baby Buzz is 5' 6", and approaching 140#, and my eyes weren't as young as yours back when he hatched. I'd love the real estate, but it'd take a 24" minimum monitor (27" preferred) for 1920 X 1200 to be seen, and that's really just a tad too big for a laptop... glasses are already +4.5 diopter, and not a viable candidate for lasik. will likely pick up standard rez 15" MBP in the next couple of weeks...
