So far, so good. I got enough for my g5 to get a 2.66 quad + an extra 4gb. In fact I could do this RIGHT NOW!!

But I should wait until the conference... RIGHT????

I waited and waited for a new MacBook Pro before taking the plunge in the spring. Now the new ones are here and the refresh is not a big deal (to me, anyway).

Now that it's just 4 days 14 hours and about 50 minutes 'til the keynote, you might as well wait.

I fig that if there's no speed bump during the conference, there won't be one for a couple of months - then I'll jump for it. I'm not sure if the octo macs qualifies as a speed bump to the line - I think not, but I'm just being greedy. The only reason I'm waiting is to save a couple hundred bucks.

I'm thinking it's time to sell the dual 1.8 G5 but I think I'm going to wait until the fall when 10.5 is out then order my Refurbished Core2Duo 20" iMac.

A couple of months ago, I was originally going to wait for the WWDC because
I expected that there would be an updated line of Mac Pros out right along with
the release of Leopard. Needless to say, Leopard was delayed, so I decided
there was no point in waiting, as I was suffering thru the performance of my old
MDD G4 with all the Lightroom and Photoshop work I was doing. I've now happily
replaced my noisy old G4 with a spanking new Mac Pro 2.66, with 5GB of RAM,
an ATI Radeon 1900XT video card and 5 hard drives stuffed inside it. This friggin'
thing is so quiet and fast compared to the G4.

I honestly don't know how much of a performance gain there would be in moving
from a dual 2.5GHz G5 to a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro, or whatever hypothetical speed
bump that might occur for the mid-range Mac Pro during the WWDC or during the
summer preceding Leopard Day. Why were you so eager to unload the dual G5?

i mean, lets think what a neww macpro might have:

the obvious: faster processor, more ram, better video -- but what else?

the only thing that would be a huge plus for me:

My usual MO. If I hold it any longer, it'll depreciate beyond the point of getting a usable price for it.

It's already out of warranty. My goal is not necessarily to get a faster machine (although I will), but to protect my original investment.

Most people spend $2500 on a machine and hold it for 6 years. Then you get $100 for it and spend another $2500. I spend no more than $300-400 a year and I always have a near current machine. Most of the time, I can sell my old machine for the price of the new one so it costs nothing at all to stay current.

I tend to ask the question, "why are you still holding on to that old machine?"

if your mac is your money making machine then your MO makes sense...

which is more or less your cost for a new machine ($2500)

would you rather have $2500 invested for 6 yrs (in say AAPL?) or
be shelling out bucks to the man (LEADER!) every year to have the
latest machine?... if there is no financial incentive, some would say
it is not worth staying at the cutting edge of technology...

i also dont like the idea of re-installing all the apps i would like
to use every year.. a small nuisance granted, but a nuisance nonetheless...

but then again you are itching for refurbs, not quite the cutting edge but
1 generation behind...

That's a good strategy. I'll have to think about it. I've been leery of selling
anything on ebay or craigslist -- seems like a PITA to me, as does migrating
annually from one Mac to another and wiping out data securely to prepare
for a transfer of ownership, but you make a good case for it.

big fallacy in your argument. First $400 is the MAX that I'd spend each year. Most of the time, like this time, it costs nothing at all. Sometimes I EVEN MAKE MONEY replacing my old machine with a new one. Second, I have a nearly new machine all of the time. Never a 3,4 or 5 year old machine.

I ALWAYS maintain a full bootable backup of my main drive. Often, I take the drives out of the old machine and install in the new. Or I just restore the backup.

The one thing that makes my technique a problem for some people is 1) I'm a MASTER ebayer - I always get top dollar on my auctions. Have a perfect feedback account w. close to 1000 +. 2) is that it does require more time than some busy people can handle.

Works for me...

Two or three weeks ago I would have said there's no point in waiting if you need it for work. With the conference less than a week away, I'd say wait.

FWIW, I used to have all my equipment on a 3-year cycle; year one get a new mac, year two get a new display, year three get a new printer, and then the cycle would repeat. Now I don't do the printing for clients that I used to do and I have a MBP, I'll get what I want when I darn well want to.

Okay, when I can afford to. But still.

It is questionable if there will be more than a modest speed increase for Xeon based motherboards in the near future. No new big speed jumps are expected for processors until Intel gets the 45 nm technology in full production around December according to the Intel IDF in April. The roadmap for chipset and CPU upgrades is pretty empty until after January 2008. They might push forward the release if production tests go well and AMD releases their new processors promptly.

There was a big stink about ATI putting out a new cutting edge graphics card for the Mac Pro. Not sure what happened to that, as it seems to have slipped away into nothingness. Also would like to see better support for a wider range of graphics cards or possibly linking cards (yes, for gaming, etc. in Windows). ATI and NVIDIA do this now with Windows machines in order to get better graphics support. It's a long shot for WWDC, I know. But a boy can dream, right? =)
