Why won't my PCI cards fit in a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8?

I just acquired a G5 Dual 1.8mHz PowerMac. It is the base model that has 4 RAM slots and PCI slots rather than PCI-X. I was able to install the USB 2.0 PCI adapter I bought a couple of months ago but neither my Adaptec 2906 PCI card nor my Xircom USB (1.1) PCI card will fit. The slots in the card are in the wrong place to fit in the slots in the G5.

When I compared the USB 2.0 PCI card that fits with the two other cards, I could see they have slots in different places. Have PCI cards changed?

If I'm missing something, it may because I didn't get much sleep last night transferring data from my B&W to this G5 but I'm confused. I had really hoped to be able to use these. (I still have an old Umax Astra 1200S scanner that I didn't want to replace plus I really didn't want to have to use a USB hub with the G5.)

If anyone can clear this up for me, I would appreciate it.

Michael

PCI cards changed from being 5v cards to 3.3v

The B&W G3 was one of the universal machines that would accept either.

I believe that stopped at the MDD G4s which only accepted 3.3v or universal cards.

You need new cards.

(though it'd probably be better to just get a decent powered hub and a USB/FW scanner. How long do you think SCSI will be supported anyway?)

Darn, I was hoping to not have to spend more money! I guess this means my old cards aren't even worth selling.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Michael

P.S. I love my old Umax scanner. I know SCSI is a dinosaur but I was trying to hold onto it as long as possible.

I used to have that scanner. Any newer scanner will blow that away in terms of quality.

The best solution in this case (provided you have the space) is to keep the Smurf as a dedicated scanning station.

What rz said. I have an Astra 1200S boxed up and languishing in the closet. I retired it when I discovered that an Epson USB scanner that I got for $50 was way faster. Not even a USB 2 model, either.

Well, I do have two $20 credits with Epson from the settlement. I'll have to see what's available from them.

if you do a lot of critical scanning, the 4490 is lowest you should go

for normal home usage, either of the others are fine

you could always look in ebay, 3170, 3200, 4180 4870 are all good numbers to search for

Cool. I just picked up a refurbished 4490 at the Epson Store. After 10% discount and my Epson settlement (it would only allow one on a purchase,) my cost was $85 including tax!

Thanks for the advice.
