Apple TV sales under predictions

Whose predictions?
Some overly optimistic 'anal'-yst who was expecting iPod-like numbers?

Not that I'm crazy about aTV, but some people go to great lengths to make Apple look bad.
I'm surprised that article didn't have a byline of 'elmo3.'

Has a long way to go before it will replace my EyeHome, was actually hopeful of the latest firmware upgrade for the PS3 but Sony dropped the ball, well for Mac users, PC users have the ability to transcode XviD and DivX on the fly.

I think Apple as a company felt that they need to have product representation in that market space. Whether it succeeds or not they need to be in the mix. If the market takes off, then they'll be poised to attack.

"There are no sales figures yet, but demand seems tepid based on anecdotal reports. "

So one person who has no idea what the target was, no idea what the actual figures are, declares it a failure. I think that is what you call spacefiller.

The AppleTV may not change the world like the iPod did but it has its market. I know several people who have bought them and are very pleased. I'm planning to buy two later this year (waiting on an update with larger hd).

I wonder what sales of the iPod Hi-Fi are like compared to Apple TV. At least that seems to have quite a bit of profit in it's price (although I've always thought that the iPod arm bands were Apple's highest profit margin hardware products).

As far as I know there is no other all-in-one solution to purchasing a video online and watching it on your tv. All the other solutions involve downloading and watching on your computer or downloading and burning a dvd. Apple is the only company that has a complete solution. So if this market takes off Apple will be in a very good position.

Agreed. I still don't get what it does, or how one would connect it up, or where it's useful. I understand Tivo, since I have one. I think it has something to do with the TV shows you can purchase on iTunes, but that, too, I simply don't get. To what... watch it over and over? To store some place for viewing years from now? I'm just not the market sector for someone who'd actually pay a couple bucks to watch a sitcom on an iPod screen. That's crazy talk. Then again, I hear millions of those downloads are being sold every month, meaning I'm not the only market sector.

I'm in the same category. I just don't see the need for it.

Apple creates many products that make me feel like I need them. For me, AppleTV is not one of those products.

I think if Apple gave it TiVo like capabilities and you were able to connect you Cable Box or Dish to it to record your favorite shows to it while you were streaming your iTunes movie I think it will really be the next "THING" that everyone wants.

I don't 100% get why I would want one or even need one right now. This is coming from someone who never wanted or needed an iPod initially and now I'm on my second one.

Personally, I think they should turn the MacMINI into a computer/AppleTV box allowing you to setup a small setup in your living room w/ a 19" LCD to surf the internet while you watching a Movie from your iTunes library (if it even has enough power). I even think Apple should RENT movies through iTunes. I believe Apple could make tons of cash renting movies via iTunes that delete or become unplayable after 5-7 days. I think you could almost set it up like NetFlix and you can have 2-3 movies at a time from the iTunes Movie Rental Service and before you download another one it removes the movie that you have already watch and/or agree to delete. After 5-7 days you have no choice.

Netfiix without the postage.

Amazon's Unbox setup will give you your "all-in-one solution". You buy online, it downloads to your Tivo and you watch it on your TV.

I would like one, but it is way too expensive for me, plus I would need a new TV. It also seems very limited in terms of what it does. For a convergence device, having a DVD player built in would be good; having TIVO like abilities would also be good (I don't have a TIVO, but understand that other people would want this). I really want the remote speakers feature for audio, but spending $100 for an AE is too much for that for me.

But to me the main issue is the limited options for actually playing anything on it. I do buy TV shows on itunes, including all of BSG, since I don't have cable. I get those out to my TV now through an RCA cable through the wall. A more elegant solution would be nice. If I could rent movies from itunes for viewing for a reasonable price, I would certainly do that do that some of the time, and I can easily see a day when that would be the easiest, best, and fastest way to get them.

I agree with this line of thinking, too, so there are at least two of us in the same market sector - maybe even three. I was hoping the first generation was merely the start of something with much broader capabiities not far down the road. I don't do tunes, and I would never purchase anything I can watch for free. Well, make that anything I'm already paying Comcast to deliver to my TV.

As far as I can tell, online TV content is more suited to "small screen" devices than home theater setups. Also, it doesn't seem to me that video content is available on a easily obtained and widespread basis,

The product is "ahead" of the market. Bad (read premature) timing.

It appeals to "geeks" but not to the mainstream average user.

I'd short APPL on this product.

From what I've read, most that have them, love them. And although this article says reviews have been "mixed, at best", most of the professional reviews I've read have all been very good, many excellent.

I think as more people see them in action, video podcasts get more popular, features get tweaked and added, and Apple keeps making deals like the upcoming YouTube one, its popularity will start to snowball. Adding Joost (which can already be done via hack) could provide free network channels without cable, as well.(not sure Apple would want to do this though)

Sales will also improve when folks realize that you don't have to buy iTunes stuff at all to enjoy one of these. For example, this blog suggests it should be marketed as a "photo station" because it does such a great job with presenting them.

Have you seen projection TV? This just blows LCD and Plasma away, even though it's just developmental at the present, unless you have big bucks. But that will change with new technology, better bulbs and volume pricing. People aren't going to be ordering from Netflix but rather downloading movies via pay-per-view or some such. Video is moving in the direction of the iPod as technolgy gets ready. We are developing stuff that we don't expect to have a real market for a couple of years, but the lead time is necessary for development. You take a chance, but better to be there when the iron strikes than get caught trying to play catch up. Apple's TV is just one reason we feel we are on the right track ourselves and will be ready when things heart up. Remember, Apple is an innovator and is out front creating new products for emerging markets. And remember, the Lisa was the precursor to the Mac. I remember how excited I was when I first saw the Lisa but despaired at the price. I had a mac on my desk not long after.

Yeah! "Come on over to my house to see pictures of my three year old" or "come over to see pictures of our vacation last summer."

Seems to me this type of offer has always produced "inward" cliche´ groans whenever home movies were mentioned.

Without current release HD cinema content the idea doesn't work for me. On the other hand, it appears that it's only a matter of time before the technology to stream the new release of major motion pictures over the internet becomes available.

When the quality of content and the method to capture payment to watch is available, devices like this will be standard products in most homes.

But until then… ?

As I always say, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong." grinning smiley

I agree Gene, I wouldn't want to see THAT either.

Just because it could be used to show pictures, doesn't mean it should be used to show BORING stuff!

Show people the pics or movies they're in and they'll have much more fun!
At least more fun than watching it on your computer!

The iTS's videos look quite good on HDTV. The resolution is only 11% lower than DVD resolution. Obtaining video from the iTS and viewing it on the Apple TV couldn't be simpler.

Suitable video content is also available via podcasts and thrid-party sources (e.g. streamburst,)

No--the exact opposite! Apple TV couldn't be simpler to set up or operate. It's a fantastic way to integrate your "digital life" with your home entertainment center. It's the only such device suitable for ordinary folks.

Do some research.
EyeHome does 90% of that list and more!

Rusty, at some point you have to admit the eyehome isn't the end all of media devices. It certainly does NOT do 90% of that list.

- plays Fairplay-protected media - no
- displays album art while doing so - no
- connects wirelessly - no
- plays HD video - no
- plays YouTube video directly (next week?) - no
- plays podcasts (both video and audio) with automatic sync'ing and deletion - maybe
- integrates your music with slideshows - sorta, it used to, just does pics now
- accesses and plays movie trailers directly - no
- is both Mac and Windows compatible - no
- provides a simple, beautiful on-screen and remote control interface - no

So even if you count the maybe and the sorta the eyehome only scores a 20% out of this list. The eyehome is great at what it does (especially at it's price point) and it was fantastic in it's day but the appletv has eclipsed it.

LOL!!

Again, do some research!
Been running two of four Eyehomes via Wifi.
Mac and Win, no problem.
720P is NOT HD.
Slideshows and Music, no problem.
AppleTV interface is stupidly simple, too simple, I have over 500 DVD's, can AppleTV do searches?

I'm waiting for the cheap knockoff versions from newegg for $99 (w/ 160GB drive), free 3-day shipping.

Rusty, tell us more about your setup - do you use multiple tuners to feed those EyeTVs?

Have you ripped all your 500+ DVDs (Handbrake?)

Etc.

I'm just playing with my EyeTV Hybrid tuner now on the Macbook

W/ an internal antenna I get 3 analog/12 digital stations.

Now thinking about putting up a rooftop UHF antenna - anybody know if I can multiplex that onto my coax carrying (currently mixed analog/digital) cable?

Ok, one at a time again.

Again, do some research!
Been running two of four Eyehomes via Wifi.
- I can guarantee this won't work via a 802.11g network because I tried it. It couldn't even do music. The eyehome apparently uses an incredibly small buffer so any spike in network activity kills it for a second which is very disrupting.

Mac and Win, no problem.
-eyehome does NOT work on windows. You always point to non-existent or outdated software claiming it works but you never produce actual links.

720P is NOT HD.
- The eyehome is not capable of outputing 720P output at a decent bitrate much less the full resolution HD. The eyehome starts to stutter at anything above 640x480.

Slideshows and Music, no problem.
-slideshows still work but not with music

AppleTV interface is stupidly simple, too simple, I have over 500 DVD's, can AppleTV do searches?
-I don't know if the appletv can do searches but I will admit it needs much better navigation.

I'm responding to Rusty's posts point by point because alot of what he posts is just plain wrong and I don't want people to make choices based on bad information.

Really? Can you point us to the EyeHome product page for the model that includes built-in WiFi? Mac and Win--I see no mention of Windows compatibility on the EyeHome Datasheet.

"720p is not HD"--WTF are you talking about? ABC is 720p. It thinks it's broadcasting in HD. Want to let them know they're wrong, Rusty? While you're at it, let PBS and Fox know too. Hey, even this guy thinks 720p is HD:

[www.hdtvprimer.com] "1280 is still considered hi-def"
[www.hdtvprimer.com] "High Definition TV) A TV that displays 1280x720 pixels or better"
[www.hdtvprimer.com] "1080i and 720p are called High Definition TV (HDTV)."

So, tell us why we should take Rusty's word for it...?

" I have over 500 DVD's, can AppleTV do searches?"--I have about 200 videos in Apple TV's Movies section now. I can locate any one in less than 5 seconds. 500 is no big deal. That's the beauty of a well-conceived and executed interface.

Any more BS you want to spout, Rusty?

Is BGnR a drinker? He seems out of character today...somewhat loud and boisterous. Did somebody steal his identity? :-))
