Sunday Morning Recipe; Worlds Best Oatmeal (if that's not an oxymoron)

Just made this for the second time this morning...
Crockpot oatmeal... assembled before bed, used an appliance timer to start it.

4 cups steel cut rolled oats (not the "quick" variety)
4 cups milk
9 cups water
(yes, it really does take 13 cups of liquid for 4 cups of oats!)
3 tsp salt
cinnamon to taste (a not-full teaspoon is good, two is a LOT, three might be lethal...).

Fruit;
I used approximately 3 cups of fresh and dried fruit.
1 apple, cut up in small chunks
about 1/2 cup each of the following;
dried apricots, chopped.
raisins
dried cranberries
dried cherries
chopped walnuts

assemble the night before...
Put in the slow cooker on "low" for about 6 hours.
Makes 12-13 servings of 1 cup size.
Great to refrigerate the leftovers for a quick microwave breakfast.

Damn, that sounds good. But I've also recently discovered the easy and still tasty Trader Joe's blueberry flaxseed oatmeal. Also, Kashi Go Lean oatmeal isn't bad. But I may have to try that slow cooker recipe some time.

It IS good!

I wanted to try "old fashioned" oats for a change... rather than the over-processed "quick oats". Not that I have anything against modern foods, mind you...

I've decanted the leftover 9 cups into single serving containers for the fridge and freezer.

I like plain old fashioned slow cooked oatmeal with butter and occasionally a little brown sugar/cinnamon.

I like it with oven baked toast and bacon. So much for heathy.

Don't forget coffee.

I'll pass on the burnt bean juice...
But otherwise that sounds good!

And for true decadence, tip a little bit of half and half on it. I do skip the toast, though. See? I know how to cut down!

I've used old fashioned oats for years, and I never have figured out how quick cooking oats become quicker. ? Now that instant stuff is totally and completely gross!

It freezes okay?

Not certain..
Last batch never made it that far...

Can't see why it wouldn't though. It fridges and reheats fine.

I use the instant only for camping. My favorite traditional brand is Bob's.

The best instant oatmeal I've found is... Best Instant Oatmeal!

that sounds absolutely pooptacular! or is it pooptastic? I just like typing poop.

poop poop poop poop poop poop poop

Oh, I switched to a huge breakfast of oatmeal on the days I don't work. My cholesterol dropped a not insignificant #, and I lost almost 30 pounds in 2 years. only real diet/lifestyle change. That and Splenda in my tea.

poop

still had one more to get out of my system.

Combine half cup steel cut oats, one cup water, hand full of raisins. After water boils, turn to low. Oats usually end up being done by the time my green tea is finished steeping. Top with 3-4 tablespoons of cream-top yogurt, a banana, a hand full of almonds, and in the last couple weeks some sliced fresh strawberries.

Been doing this one for years with minor variations depending on seasonal fruits (peaches, kiwis, berries...). I've yet to grow tired of it. I'm with everyone else; instant rolled oats just don't do it for me...

Paul, your recipe sounds intriguing and I do have a very underutilized crockpot. Hmmm...

Wave Rider;

If it don't take a couple hours, then they're "quick"...
If it's "just add hot water", they're "instant".. and yes, generally icky.

I think I OD'ed on strawberries this year...
I've eaten many pounds of excellent fresh strawberries. Don't think I' can eat any more this year.
On to Cherries! grinning smiley

I don't like soggy oatmeal. I eat Kashi 7 grain hot cereal. It's got 'flour', ground and whole grains. It's crunchy from the whole grains and I like it better that way. Less gruel-ly.

My dad farmed until he was just short of his 91-st birthday. I'm not talking the misuse of the California word "Rancher/Farmer"(2 Acres?). He had about 100 cows that he put on the Range every summer and 200 Acres to grow grain & alfalfa mix hays.

He LIVED for his morning homemade oatmeal. He would also ad his own wheat, which was cracked in his flour mill, with other healthy additions which I can't remember. Most of his generation were long dead or couldn't even get out of their houses and there he was with his pitchfork or post-hole diggers out in the weather. I guess that's about the best testimonial one could make for the benefits of oatmeal.
