10.5 for G5s and newer only?

Watching the steve show, I noticed that he said, "every 64bit app is guaranteed to work on every machine running Leopard"

I assume that one needs a 64bit computer too, hence no support for g4s...

Is there a fault in my reasoning?

Interesting..... But - I would expect, at least to some degree, the comment applies to existing applications working just fine under the new OS and not a limit to 64 bit processor only Macs. It's common knowledge what the current Leopard OS Alpha versions have worked on + I'd be very surprised if they'd leave all the early MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac Core Duo owners behind (never mind all Mac mini Intels including the currently shipping model) behind at Tiger.

It's ultimately up to Apple what Macs they enable the OS for... but - I'd expect that comment was aimed at current application compatibility with the new OS versus directed towards the hardware side.

Nor Core Duo machines.

Very few apps need to be 64bit.

That is why I was a little surprised that Apple went with Intel processors at the time. AMD had 64 bit processors across almost its entire line at the time. The 64 bit Pentium D/4 processors had 64 bit-ness grafted on as a kludge and the Core Duo line went into development before they made the decision to migrate the entire line up. The decision seems to have made sense for the time being since Intel is about 9 months ahead of AMD in implementing 65 nm manufacturing. Once a Core 2 Duo mini comes out, all the machines before it will become even more of a runt of the litter.

Watch again. At 35:29 he says Leopard is 32-bit and 64-bit, and will run 32-bit apps and 64-bit apps simulatenously.

System Requirements
To run Mac OS X Leopard, you must have a Macintosh computer with:
- An Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (800 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
- A DVD drive
- Built-in FireWire
- At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
- A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
- At least 7 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

Good Luck!
