FU: 50yr old buried car Tulsa OK Timecapsle

Remember this post:

<[forums.macresource.com];

On June 15, 1957, a new gold and white 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe was buried in a time capsule in downtown Tulsa, OK. The time capsule was part of Golden Jubilee Week: Tulsa's celebration of Oklahoma's semi-centennial.

As part of the "Tulsarama!" festivities, citizens of Tulsa were asked to guess what the population of Tulsa would be in the year 2007. The guesses were then recorded on microfilm and sealed in a steel container buried with the car. When the car and artifacts are excavated, the person whose guess is closest to Tulsa's 2007 population is to be awarded the Belvedere.

Seems that they opened the Time capsule and the car is rusted out:

Submerged in water will do that to metal.

There was a thread a few days ago too.

I'm surprised they left the battery in it, and connected. The tires were in better condition than I had expected, maybe the water helped preserve them.

what a waste, no one was smart enough to put it in a bunker or something?

now its just a big piece of junk, the only way to restore it is all new parts

They should have listened to the dealer and paid extra for the undercoating.

I have a sailboat that's only 12 years younger than that and it's been IN water almost continuously. Looks a lot better. They should have interred a boat.

"Awarded" the Belvedere for best guess? I would think "blighted" is a more appropiate.

Since Chrysler products from 1957 until, well, the 80s were notorious for rusting, is this really a surprise to anyone?

In an interview during the 1980s, one former Chrysler engineer when asked about the 1957 models quipped "The main thing I remember about them was that you owned them for about three months before you actually heard them start to rust". ;)

If you think the car is in bad condition you should see the guy that won it. I bet they had to dig him up too.

Sorry that the concrete didn't hold, that's a shame.

One question, though: how did the WINDSHIELD get rusty?!

I think a lot of that brown stuff may be mud and not rust, or rust spread around by water. The concrete vault filled with ground water over the years.

Very difficult to waterproof a concrete vault in ground, especially for 50 years. From some of the stories about this, sounded like the original planners thought the plastic bag the car was put into would keep the water out. But there are few plastics that were around then in '57 that are impermeable and would stay sealed that long.

I wonder what they're going to do with the hole in the ground. Maybe they should cram a Hummer into it for the next 50 years.

It would seem appropriate to repeat the time capsule event for another 50 years with a new vehicle, obviously plenty of interest. Although since we have seen that the bunker failed to keep water out perhaps it could become a showcase for some new manufacturer to publicly test their rust-proof technology. (yeah, and no plastic allowed)

You folks obviously aren't up on the current state of the hot rod culture. Age patinas are all the rage on modern rides with lots of money being spent to make both the new look old, and the old look old again. Kinda like that whole pre-distressed jeans thing in the late 80's.

That Plymouth coupe is gonna' wow 'em at the Nationals!

From what I read on the internet, the water level was constantly changing.

Which I believe is much worse.

Like how wharf piers are much more corroded at the waterline than either low under water of high above the water.

The person with the best guess of Tulsa's 2007 population died in 1979. The car will awarded to his closest relative.
