I just went online to check the warranty left on my iPod video (original 40 gig) and it's only has 13 days. I am pretty sure that I paid for it on my platinum card however, I'm wondering if I should come up with the $45-$55 and buy applecare for my iPod. Everything is working good so I would assume "no"... Anyone have any thought on AppleCare for an iPod?

I never bought an extra warranty... Just wondering if I should just buy it...

Depends on how you use it and how clumsy you are. If you use it to work out, run, or anything else that bounces it around or if you tend to drop it every now and then, Applecare is a good investment.

No to be nitpicky, but iPod Video or Photo? The video is only 30 and 60Gig and didn't come out long enough time ago for your warranty to be over.

Consider the replacement cost vs. the cost of the Applecare. $299 or $399 vs. $59. There could be additional costs for a new case and replacement accessories due to the new connector arrangement of the iPod with video.

Also, balance the cost of your time, the effort to get the iPod repaired using the credit card warranty extension and the length of time you will be without your iPod vs. making a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store )if you have one that is) and receiving a replacement, if needed, the same day.

I have used the credit card warranty on a 3G iPod. It involved a diagnosis of HD failure while at the Genius Bar and a phone call or two to the credit card company afterwards. The CC company needed a copy of the original receipt and a form to be mailed to them. After, a review period of a week or two, my card was credited the original purchase cost. This offset the cost of a new iPod. I also need to mail the old iPod to the CC company. BTW, the CC company was very nice about the whole thing but the process took time.

For my 60GB iPod photo, I opted for the Applecare. I use the iPod everyday, so I would miss it a lot. Also, my time and the convenience factor are worth $59.

If I remember correctly, you bought the 40gig Photo when they were closed out on Buy.com, right? I bought one for my wife at the same time. I did buy Applecare for it. The credit card warranty extension will cover an additional year after Applecare runs out.

I bought Applecare on eBay and saved about $30 over the retail price.

LA Computers usually has good deals on AppleCare.

I have been searching eBay as of late and Applecare for iPods is in about the $45 range lately.

I would do it for the No Hassle swap out if U have a Apple Store close by.

I bought iPod AppleCare for my wife's new 30GB Video iPod for $36 on eBay last month. Look for auctions that are closing during the week, not Friday, Sat., Sunday, and/or at odd times.

I highly recommend AppleCare for any iPod. My time, and convenience, is well worth the investment, compared to any other alternative. Hopefully you'll never have to use it, but if something does go wrong you're covered.

If the battery loses half it's life by the end of the 2 year applecare period, Apple will replace it for free. It certainly happened with my 3G and I was able to sell it on eBay because they replaced the whole thing with a flawless refurb unit. I'd say it nearly paid for itself in that respect. Will probably get it with my 5G before my year is up.
