I just picked up a loaded sawtooth 500 for payment for some computer work.

The thing must have cost $5000 new - 1gb of APPLE installed memory, 3x18gb cheetah drives with scsi card, ati 16mb PCI card and a AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro that has both VGA and DVI ports.

I didn't know this video card existed. It runs my old 19" crt at 1600x1200 nicely, but there is no support for my 20" widescreen dell LCD - there are NO widescreen rez options. Just stretched options.

I know I've heard of a 3rd party thingie that does this...

I'm connecting to the card's dvi port...

there's an app that helps get rez's that aren't easily available - sure someone here uses it... can't remember what it's called...

DisplayConfigX maybe? I've used it on CRT's.

Come to think of it, I tried using DisplayConfigX with the same video card as yours, with
an 19" widescreen LCD. I had no luck, ended up getting a ATI 8500 and all's well.

I recall reading an article that stated that the 16 MB Rage 128 Pro video card did not support non-4:3 resolutions on either port. Can not find it now, but from reading the supported resolutions for DVI and analog on this Knowledge Base artcle, [docs.info.apple.com] , that appears to be the case.

I used to use switchres for non standard sizes, but that was back in OS9. It may have improved, but it caused a lot of problems in 10.2, so I haven't used it since.

I'd try to track down a cheap GeForce 2MX or 4MX, or perhaps a Radeon 9000. Get yourself some Quartz Extreme support in the bargain, too.

My Radeon card worked fine with the resolution listed when I tested in OS 9 with my Dell. Think it was the original PCI Mac Radeon (could have been my Radeon 7200).

Best I can recall, pretty much any ATI card past the Rage 128 can handle some non-4:3 resolutions beyond th old near 4:3 or portrait ones. The specific resolutions each can handle vary, with more supported on the newer cards. There was some experimenting with 16:10 and 16:9 monitors back a few years ago, the wide screen panels have mostly gone to 16:10 and the resolutions are becoming standardized much more than before.
