Can't Repair Permissions

eMac 700. 640MB. Panther

when i run Disk Utility to repair permissions i get the following after a few minutes:

Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.

relaunching doesn't help. Onyx can run the Periodic Maintenance Scripts but chokes on Repair Permissions.

I ran Disk Warrior last night. it spent a long, long time on 'Locating Directory' but it finally did complete it's sweep. no change in running repair permissions.

i suspected a problem because some programs had been acting funny. i used iTunes last night and it was very quirky - i needed to change the name of an album folder and had to wait about 4 seconds between typing each letter of the title. however, after running DW iTunes is operating normally.

suggestions? is there a back-up and reinstall Panther in my near future?

take iTunes out of your apps folder to desktop. try DU again.

okay Fritz and Pat - Why did that work?

permissions are repaired and iTunes is back in Apps.

what was going on? since iTunes worked after i ran DW is thought that it couldn't be the problem. apparently it was.

will i have to remove iTunes from Apps in order to repair permissions from now on?

does any other program cause this type of problem?

oh, and thank you very much.

Yes, a follow up explanation would be appreciated. I've not heard about this iTunes issue. Glad it _did_ work, graylocks.

in your receipts folder, there are some iTunes pkg receipts.

it's one of them, probably iTunes.pkg.

there are 4 items in the HD Receipts library that say iTunes though one includes the word phone.

are this iTunes pkg receipt something that i can/should remove? are they all better now that i repaired permissions?

After the latest SW update, I had the same problem on both my iBook G3 800 and my iMac G3 400 (both use OS 10.3.9). I just followed the directions already given in this thread and all was well.
