Anybody buy the Sealy Fenway Mattress deal at Costco?

They have $115 off right now. I've been considering getting rid of my waterbed and going to a more conventional mattress. Is this a good bed, deal?

I have a Sealy "Northstar" that Sams Club has been selling for many years
and it looks pretty much like the Costco one

The dirty little secret in the mattress biz is that the manufactures give large buyers
different model names for the same mattress so you can't price match

When I bought mine I looked at local furniture stores , retail mattress stores and dept stores
and I kept finding the same mattress (per specs) with a different name.
Sometimes the fabric cover was changes but other than that identical

The one at Sams was half the price of the furniture store version.

My Sealy has held up very nicely for about 8 years now

Thanks for the link!

My next concern is bedbugs. I just read a scary article about how they are coming back and eve a new mattress bought from a reputable company may be delivered along side of someone's old mattress that they replaced which could have bed bugs.

When I bought mine at Sams it came in a heat sealed plastic cover so unless
the bed bugs are at the factory you should be OK

Bedbugs are a serious concern -- but it's also fairly obvious if you have them, as you'll get bitten: [www.thebostonchannel.com]

Clawhead's response, in the small print at the bottom of davester's linked article pretty well sums up reality best:

"Seth Stevenson's right about ignoring mattress salesmen and listening instead to your back. The problem is, you can't really try out a mattress in three minutes. You need to give it at least a few nights. Also, I suspect Seth is under 40. Otherwise his back would be more particular. When I was 21, I spent nearly two weeks sleeping on a the rear seat of a Fiat (it was in a friend's living room, not in the Fiat). No complaints, then. Now I can't imagine doing that. At some point in my body's gradual deterioration, mattress quality starting becoming embarrassingly important..."

The original article talks about buying your own pieces of egg crate foam to cheaply customize the feel of a mattress, and other such economic tricks. Too much work! Easier to go to warehouse size mattress store where you can test them all, ready-made, side by side. Being (well) over 40 with a highly deteriorated body, I can now tell in three minutes if a mattress has chance of even making it a few nights. In my 20's and early 30's, there was no way I could tell. As to costco, there are "cheat sheets" available that give you the different names of the same mattresses being sold at different dealers. So find out what costco Sealy "Fenway" is at other local/regional dealers, and go compare a bunch at the same place. That's the trouble w/ costco/Sam's type places, no place to do side by side comparisons. If you do the comparisons elsewhere, and still like the mattress, then the specials at the club stores are tough to beat, and you should get it (or if you're under 30, skip the comparisons, and just get it, because it is a good deal for price/quality).

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

If you live in the right part of the country, you might want to check these guys [www.originalmattress.com].

They sell a couple of different lines, distinguished by the internal springs, etc. Within the lines, they have specific models distinguished by the amount of padding; more padding costs more.

They have a "comfort policy" that allows you to bring a mattress back for up to a year if you don't like the feel. They will rebuild it to a higher or lower level, as you desire.

I bought an "Orthopedic" at the second level of padding. After about 3 months, we decided that it just wasn't comfortable--we had bought a mattress that was firmer than our old one. They upgraded it two levels for $50 (they did not charge the price of the upgraded model).

One caution: while I was there, a lady was busy downgrading her mattress to less padding. They charged her, as well, and did not refund her to the price of the lower level. Her mattress was pretty new; she was unhappy to not get refunded the difference.

If you want innerspring, Original Mattress Factory is the place. No BS, 1/3 the price of the big name brands.

But don't do innerspring. Build your own foam mattress. Really.

edit the above so it makes sense, and check out that thread.

You *can* spend $1500 or $3000 on a foam mattress....or you can just build your own for $200 to $500.

I built my own. Works great. And believe me, foam is foam. If the specs are the same, it doesn't matter if it comes from Tempurpedic or Joe's Foam Supply.

elmo, thanks for that link (I'm pretty sure I've seen it before)...

My memory foam futon mattress is due either tomorrow or day after (I HATE UPS!!!) ... I will post back here with a full report, when I get it and have had a chance to try it out.
