bought a new Aquos and figure mi's well get us a upconverting DVD player with HDMI outs to go with it.

Seems like there are some nice $80 Toshiba models and $200 HK models and stuff in between. Of course there are always more expensive, but I don't think we that picky.

Any to recommend or stay away from or a reason to spend more or less?

Yes, I've read the old links. Looking for more current info, if there is any.

Don't care about surround sound.

Second the Oppo if you're at all interested in getting the most from your new set up.

A little pricey, but not for what you get. Could easily be sold for twice the price (and their competitors do sell theirs for twice the price and more). If you have a 720p set, then the Oppo will maximize your experience. A cool feature is that you can set it to all region play, if that matters to you. The technology in the Oppo is state of the art. Plus, they include an HDMI cable (and not a cheap one, either) and all the other cables you need to get up and running. Few others do that.

Some of the "cheaper" upconverters are just that. Cheap.
We had the Toshiba. It crapped out after a year of use. It was nowhere near the Oppo in picture quality or features, but it was also less than half the price.

One exception might be the Sony DVP-NS75H . Though the picture quality is still below the Oppo, the price is reasonable for HDMI connectivity.

By the time you figure in the cost of cables, etc. the Oppo begins to look better and better pricewise.

hmmmmmm, has anyone heard of this maker called oppo?

since this is for a 32" 720p screen, judging from oppo's comp chart, I should get the 970HD?

Another for Oppo. I have the DV-970HD and it's a great piece of equipment. The construction isn't the greatest but besides the upconverting quality it can handle any type of disc from anywhere in the world by pressing setup, then pressing 9210 on the remote.

I've got the Oppo dv-981-hd; great machine, imo. The only caveat I'd alert you to is to find a DVD player that supports DivX Hi-Def, they're relatively rare in my experience.

I've got many 720p & 1080i .avi DivX videos which have to be downsampled to view on the oppo or *any* player which doesn't support DivX hi-def. They can, of course, be streamed from a computer w/sufficient horsepower:-)

Yeah. You'd be wasting money on the 981 unless you have 1080p.
