Restart does not work, Force Restart does not work either.

I just installed the latest Security Update, but not 10.4.10 yet.

PowerBook G4/1.67 - 2GB/80GB Only 2.5 GB of free space (working on it)

Running 10.4.9

Repaired permissions, cleaned caches.

I have never encountered this problem before. Would it be safe to unplug it and remove the battery?

Press these:

I know... you don't have them. But I LOVE these buttons. Look at old mac lab specimens and you'll see tons of INK on these buttons. Why? Because you HAD to press them...frequently. That and reset PRAM...

which YOU could do.. you know...

Force restart, as in holding down the power button? I've never seen that not work.

OK, holding down the power button did shut it down. The 3 finger salute didn't. It started up fine.

The three-finger salute? What is this, 1997?

What happened that made you think that you had to force-restart?

Now that you've done the dirty deed, have you done anything to confirm that you haven't damaged your data? Verified with the Disk Utility? Anything? Or are you just taking it on faith that your computer can take whatever abuse you throw its way?

With only about 3% free space on your HD (2.5GB on an 80GB drive), you're flirting with disaster (it's usually recommended that you keep 10% to 20% free). Besides flakey performance, there are problems like overlapped files and/or not enough contiguous free space for certain disk utilities to run properly, if at all (to try and fix those overlapped files).

Seen it happen.

Certainly not trying to make you paranoid, but you might want to think about backing up that drive, just in case (assuming you haven't already).

I would not feel comfortable with less than 20% free disk space, preferably more…
