PhotoShop CS and Elements 3.0 Scans Error Off After Scanning

I'm running the following: G4 Dual 867 with 1.75 GB RAM, OS 10.4.9, PhotoShop CS 8.0, PhotoShop Elements 3.0, CanoScan FS4000US film scanner, CanoScan LiDE 60 flat bed scanner, both scanners with fairly recent support software.

For months, I have been using PhotoShop CS to scan slides and negatives on the film scanner and prints on the flat bed scanner. Today every time I try to scan anything on either scanner from either PhotoShop CS or Elements 3.0 they go through the motions and then after completing the scans show error window saying "Could not complete the import command because of a program error." Neither program crashes, just will not scan. I tried deleting the com.adobe.photoshopCS.plist file and the "Adobe Photoshop CS Settings" folder from the Preferences folder in the Library and relaunched Photoshop. This had been suggested a while ago when I had a problem with the cropping tool in PS so thought it might work here. I did the same thing for Elements. I then ran both applications and the problem was still there.

Next I tried making a copy of a document using the LiDE 60 and the CanoScan Toolbox and there was no problem. I next ran Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0.2 and scanned from within it with no problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to try next besides burn the computer.

The problem is worse than I thought. I get the same error message when trying to load a jpg file into PhotoShop CS or Elements.

Have you tried reinstalling CS and Elements? You could also delete the preferences files to see if they got corrupted. Since both apps are giving you trouble, it would seem to be a shared file that is the problem.

I did delete the preference files and it did not help. Now I can't load a picture from disk. I would like to avoid reinstalling if possible and would like to uninstall them if I could to assure that all the old support files are deleted. I don't recall that the installers for each have uninstall capability.

I've had occasional issues with PSE 3.0 and I've just deleted everything I could find that looked like it was a PSE file. Then, I reinstalled and everything started working again.

Unfortunately, the only way to know if it will work is to try it.

Sorry, I can't be more helpful.

I just now tried to do a "New File" in PS and got the same message. I have deleted everything that remotely looks like it is related to either of the applications and am now to the point of running Carbon Copy Cloner, reformatting the HD, and starting over. I have been wanting to replace the 60MB boot disk with a larger one and now seems to be the right time.

if your boot disk was only 60MB, that it was like 10 years overdue!

I know you meant 60GB though.

Oops! Yes, I meant 60 GB. It also has a 120 GB internal drive. I have a new 300 GB mechanism so thought I'd make the 120GB the boot drive and replace the 60 with the 300.

As for disk capacity, I once worked with an IBM 1800 system used in oil field data acquisition and control that had a disk drive that was 6 feet tall and had three removable 500 KB platters giving a total capacity of 1.5 MB. That was in the early 1970s. How things have changed.
