Urggh! Safari won't load pages that Firefox can
Posted by: laarree

I'm here at work, and am perpetually baffled why Safari refuses to load
many many many webpages (I get an endlessly spinning clocky-thingie)
whereas Firefox has no problems with the very same pages.

Right now I've got my Mac Pro at Tiger 10.4.10, Safari 2.0.4, Firefox 2.0.
I've tinkered with security settings in Safari (I have Plug-ins, Java, JavaScript
enabled, cookies accepted only from sites I navigate to, pop-ups blocked),
I've purged cache, history, reset Safari, etc. This situation has persisted for a
lonnnng time. At home I have no similar difficulties with a very similar Mac setup.

Any insights, explanations, solutions? I want to know.

Hmm. My Safari is set up the same as Laree, and CNN loads fine, about 3 seconds with cable.

I did install Safari 3 beta. It's better than Safari 2 with loading these problem
pages, but still chokes on some of them.

For example, I just tested [www.newegg.com] in both Firefox 2 and Safari 3 beta.
Firefox loads it in a snap, but Safari 3 spins and spins and eventually
displays the message "Safari could not open the page “[www.newegg.com]”
because the server stopped responding."

laarree, I'm getting to that page just fine in Safari 1.3.2 (OS10.3.9 in an old MDD G4), so something's definitely not right w/yours. Maybe reinstall the program?

I only see any real advantage w/FF on really slow machines, like my clamshell iBook, where going to FF has made a huge difference.

Same here, no problems.

This is not to say that Safari is without limitations, just that in this instance, it works fine.

Fascinating. I put that newegg link into the w3c validator and it reported
442 errors. I put the url of this thread into the validator and it reported
42 errors.

I've had the reverse problem. Sometimes firefox won't open my yahoo page but safari will. There's one other site that happens on sometimes.

I have the same problem. Many pages will not load in safari but work fine in firefox. Very frustrating as I am forced to run two web browsers at the same time. If I told my pc friends that I'd be the laughing stock of the group. I have trouble with the apple website, yahoo groups, and various other sites.

Try those sites as a New User, or Test User. It may be a corrupt cache or preference thing.

One thing I have learned is that if you quit safari, start it again, and choose "reopen all windows from last session" from the history menu that the pages in question will work. There's a bug in safari and I'll be glad when apple fixes it.
