old news. Automatic license plate checkers are currently in use in major metro areas in the US (and elsewhere, no doubt) scanning for violations. Private companies get the contract, drive the van around (loaded with cameras, electronics, databases, datalinks, etc.). When they find a 'violator' they flag the car for towing, call the tow company, and the car is impounded until fees and whatnot are paid.

Why don't they use this device for getting illegal drivers off the road? No one seemssto be checking them.

I think cars should have a sensor - and in numerous locations around a city there should be hidden detectors to catch violators.

I have 3 friends whose cars have been totaled by illegal drivers (tag, no insurance, and illegal immigrants) in the last 4 months.

One is still in the hospital.

Valid license plates are the 'illegal car sensor'. They are the only marking that is supposed to be on the car AND identify the legal status of the vehicle (NOT the driver).

The ability to get license plates is supposed to be linked to the owner having insurance in many states. In Ohio they merely ask you to 'sign a document' that says you have insurance. The full integration of licensing with the insurance industry is an insurance industry wet dream, and brings up government database linking to insurance database issues, etc. I for one would NOT like to see that happen (although it does because it's too easy to do it).

I think the police/CHP have the ability to check for insurance real time now in California.

Why have 'plates' or registrations? What good are they?
Why have plates or registrations that expire?
Why not have automatically-renewing plates/registrations?
Who woke up and decided such things were what society needs?

Yeppers.
For the last few years, you also can't do the "Get one month of insurance, register car, drop insurance for 11 months" scam.
DMV will drop your registration, put the car on the no insurance list, cops will have the car towed and impounded.

I wonder what happens when the checker runs up against the tinted license plate cover (it's illegal to cover the license plate with *anything* in CA.

The tinted covers are popular in the SF Bay Area, to help disguise the plate. And I say "plate" rather than "plates" because so far, I've only seen them on the back (illuminated) plate.

Against the law in California.
When it cannot "Computer Read" the plate it kicks it to a human, who has much better pattern matching skills who then issues a ticket to have the problem fixed.
