Taking the music outside

My computer is centrally located in about the middle of the house with 1 AirPort Express in the living room connected to the stereo & another in the kitchen connected to a pair of JBL Creature Speakers. This set-up works great & I get seamless music throughout the part of the house I spend the most time in & easily control iTunes with the Apple remote.

Sometimes I want to go outside & take the music with me but am unsure of the best way to go about doing this. I'd like a pair of headphones that could receive the wireless signal from the router but does such a thing exist? I know there are bluetooth headphones but I'm not willing to shell out bucks on something that might not work at all. There's also the option of an outside wireless (900MHz) speaker. This wouldn't be stereo because it's a single speaker, but at least the tunes would be outside.

I've also considered using a splitter on the kitchen AirPort with one wire running outside to another set of amplified speakers but this will have to be a last resort because of the durability of any speakers I put out there.

Any thought or comments on this matter?

I use a, slightly modified, fm transmitter which was inexpensive and easy. That would allow you to use either headphones or a radio. You can see my more detailed post here:

If the music is being sent to a fixed location you might get a bluetooth, WiFi or FM solution that will work okay.

Anything like headphones that move around with any amount of range will likely be less successful. In my experience too many drop outs, pops and clicks to make it enjoyable.

I really would like to see a reasonably priced portable Wi Fi audio receiver that you could plug just about any headphones into.

Seems a simple thing to design... and a reasonable one, given the ubiquity of wi-fi networks these days.

For my back yard music I either crank it up or move the speaker to an open window. Low tech, but it work every time smiling smiley

And for walking around, there is always the trusty iPod.

How far away is the stereo from where you'd be outside?

A pair of wireless speakers connected to the stereo might be the solution you're looking for.

Edit:

I meant "wireless outdoor speakers."

A slightly related subject, I am looking for outdoor "rock" speakers. Any recommendations? I want them to sound decent.

I think a $29 refurb shuffle is the easiest and best way to go. I would guess that interference on 900 mhz could drive you crazy; for example, most baby monitors are at 900 mhz.

I should say that I have wanted to do something similar for years and have never spent the money to do so (I want music in my basketball barn). I would guess speakers can handle being outside just fine, and there are multiple decent choices for nonpowered outdoor speakers that are wall mountable. I think it is the amp that would be water and temp sensitive. My plan is to get an old receiver used at a garage sale, or use my old receiver and finally get around to upgrading mine in the living room.

This is the wireless speaker I was considering.

Great suggestion Jp! but you seem to have missed the point.

My back yard is well within the wireless router's range. I've taken the MacBook outside & had no problem staying online anywhere I wanted to go with it.

I've seen several outdoor rock speakers during my searches. They aren't cheap but I found one set that looked promising. I'll send the link when (& if) I come across it.

We use a 900 mh speaker attached to the sattelite tv, and listen to XM outside on the deck at the GFs house.
I use iTunes and some weatherproof speakers that someone threw on the trash pile.
I cleaned off some dirt, and they work fine at my townhouse.

Local Costco has some rock speakers, don't know how they sound.
