Anybody still fax?
Posted by: MacMission

(Oops. I accidentally posted to DM...anybody ever do that?)

I rarely send or recieve faxes anymore since the wide distribution of email and pdf files. I'm cancelling my dedicated fax phone line. The few faxes I receive are handled by my online onebox.com account that converts faxes to pdf format and emails them to me.

I justified keeping the second line for houseguests but now they all have cell phones so I'm just wasting money.

Yeah, constantly.

Job requires it.

Faxes seem so pointless. People who insist on them make me irate. I have a Panasonic plain paper model--my stock coversheet says To: ASSHAT!

The question is, why? What cannot be accomplished with an email (and be 10x more reliable)?

I've never faxed anything in my life and would be surprised if I ever do.

Jim,

The vast majority of my customers fax in their purchase orders. They could e-mail them or call the POs in but they prefer to fax them. My guess is they want a hard copy of the PO for their records, the same way that I want a hard copy of it for my own.

I fax out very little but still receive many faxed documents.

Too many people haven't figured out how to make online forms that can be filled in and returned so any time I need to reserve tradeshow space, complete a contract or the like I get a fax.

I was just looking at the fax with a dried out cart. I have one more cart and then won't buy any more. We really just use it as a low-end copier.

Last thing I ever faxed out was probably a resume -- straight from my Mac, several years ago.

Incoming, we get from one of our few remaining clients who have not gravitated to our website, and a shiteload of junk faxes.

Occasionally.

I was happy to find that OS10.4 on my G5 with its built-in modem could do faxes.

I had gotten rid of my plain paper fax because I was getting too many spam faxes and the Brother unit that I was using kept running itself out of ink with its daily cleaning cycle.

Now I just turn it on in the preference panel when I need to use it,

Wonderful!

i find i'm faxing a lot in the last few months but my stand alone fax hasn't been used in years.

i use MaxEmail to receive and send faxes via email. i use my scanner for documents not generated by my computer. it means i can receive faxes even when traveling and the fax machine no longer occupies desk space.

I was REALLY pissed off a few years ago at Apple during the migration to OS X. I had a Applecare issue and the ONLY way they would take it was by FAX or SNAIL MAIL. I couldn't believe that a company as cool as Apple made it's users rely on "Outdated Technology" like faxes.

This was before Faxing was built into the OS and was working right.

Here's the thread over at DM with the details:

Man I remember I was pissed, that was so stupid.

Yes, I do FAX some...perhaps 3-5 times per month. I have my old reliable Panasonic FAX/phone/copier hooked up with a two-way plug in my phone line. When I need to use it, I simply turn it on, FAX, and turn it off. It's quite frugal with its toner cartridge...I haven't replaced it in more than a year or so. Don't need a dedicated line, so it's fine for my purposes.

I guess when the last toner cartridge I have runs out (I have two left) I'll convert over to using my G5's FAX feature, as it's a Rev. A with the built-in modem. Why do I FAX? There are certain situations I run into where it's the ONLY way to get something accomplished quickly...like dealing with a governmental agency, for example. Or my doctor may want me to sign something important, and FAX it back to his office. Or there's the odd client who's still in the Stone Age, and needs a document via FAX. Hey, it does happen, but not often.

Almost everyday, at least once.

It's a point-to-point transmission for P.O.'s...(might contain CC numbers, Account Codes, etc.). It's one transmission, and the trail ends at the destination. Obviously somebody untrustworthy can copy the details, etc, etc...but much easier to forward anything via email, and have it move on forever.

I fax press releases a couple times a month, about 30-40 calls at a shot, straight from the mac. I bought a fax machine recently because I was in the middle of a real estate purchase and realtors fax heavily, but it's mostly gone unused. Mortgage folks need a lot of stuff faxed to them too.
I've had to fax other things besides all this . . . I fax at work all the time. I guess I'm strange.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.
