system 7.6, Finder error type 8 ???

help figure out system 7.6, error type 8 problem.

All I am doing is booting with extensions OFF. I get about 2 minutes of finder play time before I eventually get this error/crash, that asks for restart.

I wish I had the OS disks. smiling smiley [3.5" floppies...if anyone has some.]

Well, at least I can download the OS, now how to write them to floppies...been ages since I touched one.

Sounds like a job for the venerable Apple 300e CD-ROM drive (or some other CD-ROM drive in an external SCSI case). I still have one that I used with my IIci. I guess one of these days I should see if it works and toss it if it doesn't.

Hmm, never saw an error 8, though I do remember seeing error 11. Here's the error list from Apple [docs.info.apple.com]

When things went wrong in System 7.x, booting with Extensions Off and deleting the Finder preference and QuickTime preference files usually fixed it.

Unfortunately the lastest OS Apple has posted on their website is System 7.5.5. Later versions are only System updates.

pretty sure I've still got a 7.6 CD around here..., not so sure about the floppies. I think I used the floppy set as a surprise gift at the So Cal MRF luncheon a while back, but I don't recall who "won". It might be in Gene L's pics if he still has them, and then again, the floppy set could have even been 7.1... I'll look for the CD tomorrow... oops, nevermind, found it, it was in the pile of old CD's next to me. PM me w/ your ftp site info, and I'll upload the disc images folder... approx 32MB, unless you have an email address that will accept attachments that large...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

The link in my original post has the 7.6.1 download, if I am reading it correctly.

That's just the upgrade from 7.6 to 7.6.1, you still need 7.6 to begin with to do a fresh install.

I'm pretty sure I have all the 7.6 system floppies stored away somewhere. If you
still need them let me know and I'll have a look for them later today. I imagine
it's possible to send them to you as an attachment.

A CD-ROM drive for a IIci is worth having, if you still do anything with the machine. I have 7.6 on CD, which I was able to install on older machines using an external CD-ROM drive. I think you could find older Apple CD-ROMS for little or nothing. The 4X drives that shipped in 7200s and 7500s would do the job, installed in a SCSI case. A SCSI case and cable ought to be practically free these days.

Jp!,
What type of Mac do you have? I would check [www.lowendmac.com] and if you can use System 7.5.3 - you can download the full version from your link and install that instead of System 7.6.x. Note you only need to make 1 floppy disk (Disk 1 ot 19). The other 18 disk images can be mounted directly from your hard drive.

II ci.

I might go that route.

I would also just like to try and boot from another partition that MIGHT have a system folder, but I can't get past the error to see.

What is the KEY COMBO to choose the boot partition? (if one exists in 7.6)

It's been a long time so I'm not sure, but it may be possible to get the computer to boot to another partition (which it should "see" as another volume) if there is a system folder on it by restarting the computer while holding down shift, option, command, and delete keys.

again, I've got a 7.6 CD sitting here, complete w/ a folder of install images of all the floppies from the floppy version. approx 32MB total for the 20+ images, ready & waiting to be sent somewhere...

Use the Extensions Manager, switch to the base-set and restart to see if you still get the error.
