Mom Switcher !

Wow ! After years of encouragement, nagging, and eventual 'refusing to support her spyware ridden Windows box, Mom switched !

She waltzed into the Apple store and picked up a 20" iMac. They also just got 'WildBlue' for broaband (They live in the boonies- too far for Cable or DSL).

And when she got it home the FUD begain- bro in law (they share a big farmhouse with a ton of kids) claimed it needed 'anti virus' and 'a wireless adapter' and 'a network card' and encouraged her to 'get the guys from the Geek Squad' to hook it up for her.

So she called me. Whew. So this morning she's off to buy an el cheapo Linksys router, plug it in to the Satellite modem, and begin to convert. And to tell the Geek boys to not come by. (I suggested she tell them she had a shotgun, but she didn't find that funny.I also told her about the time I went into the WorstBuy store, and changed the radio station that was blaring Death Metal to the local classical station.. and almost got kicked out...)

Good job, but why does she need the router? Won't the iMac just plug directly into the modem?

The router is to the other computers in the house can hook up to the 'wider' band satellite modem. (I won't call it broadband- I have cable so I'm spoiled)

Even if only one computer is connected to broadband, a NAT router works as a pretty darn effective Firewall. Since you make mention of multiple computers at your mom's house, a router of course will be quite useful.

Congratulations to your mom for her new iMac. I'm still plugging away on a G3 iMac. I can only dream of Intel Macs until the end of the year.

BAD advice on the router. Linksys' are a PAIN to configure by comparison with any other brand, which is why you see SO MANY "linksys" (ie unsecured and I can't even figure out how to rename the damn thing) networks when you open your Airport card.

ANY other brand would have been a better choice. I went with Hawking and have had no trouble, but of course Apple's is far and away the best, esp now with the new setup software.

Nevertheless, you get a special bostonian
