I have removed my superdrive and instead have installed 2 pata drives in the optical bay. Works great - except... When I launch dvd player, I'm told there's no 'valid DVD' drive... I have the very drive that I removed powered up and on the FW bus, but DVD player doesn't care.

Can't launch VIDEO_TS folders either...

I've tried pram zapping, patchburn 4.04, removing dvd player prefs...

no luck - any ideas?

restart with the drive attached & powered on with a disk in it?

been searching for a while... see the question asked in many places, but have not yet found a sure answer. I haven't tried the PMU - guess I should do that next...

How about a different DVD player? VLC will play DVDs.

VLC works fine, but I like to use dvd player - it blacks out both monitors. VLC has the option, but it doesn't work most of the time...

and I'm worried about idvd... I'll need that one day...

iDVD5 on up doesn't need a DVD drive installed internally AFAIK.

oh yeah... forgot about that

just launched it to verify - launched no problem...

perhaps if it's only dvd player that is the problem, I could find a good alternative...

It won't be till later that I can turn the machine off and hit the pmu for those of you on the edges of their seats...

maybe hook up the removed superdrive in an external fw case? G5 here plays nice w/ external Pioneer superdrive, and use it frequently because it's way quieter than the internal superdrive... but since internal is still intact, not sure if that plays a role in the external operation.... will be curious to hear results. also, what sort of throughput are you getting from the PATA drives??? how slow do they seem compared to the speedy SATA's?

You can't do it. It is part of the DVD licensing agreement for Apple's dvd player.

It's a feature, not a bug.

Your best solution, as voodoopenguin said, is VLC.

EDIT: HMMM, I just found this so maybe there is a workaround. Other macintouch readers report no success using this method so YMMV. Note it is 10.3

I was able to fix the -70012 problem (and blocky artifact problem) [Mar. 17] I was experiencing with a stock DVD drive moved to an the external FW enclosure by reinstalling DVD Player 4.0 from the 10.3 CD. Instructions are below:

1. Download and install Pacifist.
2. Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.
3. Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.
4. Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.
5. The important files/folders to replace are:
-AppleAltiVecDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRadeon8500DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeonDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRage128DVDDriver.bundle (if graphics card is installed)
-DVDPlayback.framework
-DVD.framework
-rtadvd
**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.
6. Select each or all and click Install.
7. Choose to replace all existing files.
8. Restart. Repair permissions.

Your (external) DVD player should be back and be operational -- without blocky artifacts, too. [www.macintouch.com]

btw for those searching... this crack was developed for 10.4.8, but works on my 10.4.10 install

sata dvd drive, to a sata pass through card so that the sata card goes from itself to an internal sata connection. My windows machine sees my external sata as an internal drive thanks to that.
