Where can I pickup OEM Catalytic Converter for 98 Olds Silhoutte in Chicago area??

I need to pick one of these up in the Chicago area for a good price.
Anyone know where I can get one fast??

TIA,
Prof

P.S.- I've tried the usual local auto parts chains.
None stock the OEM part.

Victory Auto Wreckers? Sorry, couldn't resist mentioning a company that has been running the same ad nonstop for over 20 years...

I don't know in Chicago, but one point and one question:

The same part is used in Chevy Venture and Pontiac Transport/Montana. You might find one for one of those...

The OEM part is not made by GM. They source it from the same companies (like Walker) that sell in aftermarket under their own names. Why does it have to be OEM? Same part, (generally) more expensive....

Good luck,

Cary

Good luck finding a cheap one right now. Supposedly converters are REALLY in demand and thieves are stealing them off cars left and right. A friend told me Sunday that his sister, who is a postal employee at the downtown Chicago post office, had her converter stolen off her less than 1yr old Jeep RIGHT IN THE FEDERAL PARKING LOT. Somebody cut it off with a sawzall in broad daylight.

Good Luck!

The auto parts stores all sell the generic convertors but I've been told for this van it would require cutting pipe and welding to make it work. The OEM part is more expensive but
it comes with the full pipe intact and would just require swapping out for an easier
replacement. If I could find one that has the full piping and would be the same sort
swap out as the OEM part. I would go with that instead.

Thanks for your help,
Prof

Here's a place (online) that has both cat only and cat tubing for direct bolt-in. I would call the manufacturer and ask who distributes/sells in Chicago, call them and ask where you can buy it.

Most auto parts get special orders very quickly...

The Feds say that the auto wreckers can't sell used CatCons.

Three things.:

1. You'll be lucky if it can be unbolted. Most likely it will have to be cut out and welded back in anyway.
2. What made it go out in the first place? Make sure to get that fixed first.
3. Is it still under Federal Smog Warranty?
My 1992 vehicle was under a Ten Year Federal Smog Warranty for the whole pollution control system.

Any GM dealer should be able to order one.

This is where my uncle (Owns a local 5 bay repair shop) get lots of stuff that usually can't be easily found.

Catalytic converters are supposedly worth $40 to $70 for Domestic converters for just the metal value - no questions asked.

See [www.integritymetalscompany.com] for some prices.
