I am about to purchase a MacBookPro but my situation here has changed and I cannot afford to get the extra protection. Is that stupid not to get it on a notebook?

Can you not wait until your current warranty is almost up?

You can purchase Applecare up until the original one year warranty runs out. Also, If you pruchase your MacBook Pro with many credit cards, they will double the manufacturer's warranty, so you will get two years instead of one.

you have a year for hardware (and 90 days for phone support) included in the purchase price of the machine.

You have to purchase AppleCare within that year for it to be valid, so save yer pennies.

Some credit cards, like AMEX, will double the original manufacturer's warranty, if you purchase the item with their card. So, if you get one year from Apple they will add another year, thus doubling the warranty to two years. You get one year from Apple and the second year from AMEX.

Also - buying on e-bay significantly reduces the cost

I just paid $189 for it on ebay. I got my Macbook Pro two weeks ago and had planned to wait awhile, but the price seemed right ($350 retail).

Oh! I thought you meant if i use multiple credit cards I can extend the warranty. I was like, "What??" haha

I will check on eBay as well when the time comes. How can they sell Applecare though?

They just do. I bought it for a Macbook, and registered it with no problem at all.

LA Computer also sells AC pretty cheap. I've bought from them a few times. Might also check expercom.com.

L.A. Computer Company sells Applecare at a hefty discount, and it's a new, sealed retal package. You might find it cheaper on ebay but with LACC there is no risk.

Unless it's a refurb. AMEX won't extend those. Don't know about the other cards.
