when I was in the best shape of my adult life, post back injury, no significant added muscle (just what still remained 3 years later), the top end of Koop's reading was dead on target with what I weighed at the time.

A little better than the BMI, but still not accurate for me. To get to 176 pounds, I'd need to starve, dehydrate & stop lifting for a year.

okay, then. try looking at all the OTHER "Ideal Weight" links found in google. You'd have to be a CORPSE post autopsy!

I am in ideal (now that I lost 36 pounds) per Koop, right now. But in SOME of the links I found, I'd have to lose another 30 pounds and losing 60 pounds would put me in the LOWER ideal weight of some of them. INSANE.

Well, it's cheering, anyway. :-)

It puts me at the low end of ideal. It provides no way of getting at the real truth, which is that I'm seriously underweight, except for my abdomen, which is borderline overweight.

see, I have muscular (not huge) legs. And when I used to lift, the guy the same build as me but with SMALLER (puny) legs was like 15 pounds lighter than me. I have no desire to lose muscle mass in my legs to get to some ideal. I can lift the whole stack (nautilus) on a leg extension with ONE LEG.

Doesn't work for me. 5' 10" medium build lists 182.5 as my max ideal weight. I've been 180 before and it was NOT GOOD. My blood pressure was a bit too high at that weight also, and as we all should know, high BP and overweight go hand in hand. 175 is as high as I can go and still be able to engage in fairly vigorous physical activity without strain. 170 is close to ideal and the chart lists 166 as the low end of ideal.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Hm. According to that, I have MUCH less weight to lose than I thought. While that is certainly appealing, the range seems a bit high.
