New Dorm Refrigerators are misleading, plus I could have had a Cube Fridge for $16.95

I saw that WalMart had a1.7cu.ft. for $50 but I didn't really want to buy it there so today the
Target ad had one $60 and I thought lets go. Well the new Cube refrigerators aren't
refrigerators as I know them, they're thermoelectric coolers only capable of
dropping the inside temp by 20-30 degrees below the ambient temp. Well the Target
ad said it had a freezer compartment so I figured it couldn't be thermo-electric but when
we looked at it had no freezer compartment and was thermoelectric. I asked the
manager if there was a misprint or if the right one didn't come in. He took me to the
normal housewares section, I was looking in the special Dorm section, and found both
a regular 1.6 cube Refrigerator and the misleading one. He said I'll knock $20 off the
reg. one since they're was misleading, I said deal, I got a stainless steel Chefmate 1.6
cu.ft. for $69.95. He said to have the clerk call him when we checked out. She did and I
heard him say $69.95 over the walkie-talkie but as we were walking out and looking at
the register tape I noticed she only charged us $16.95 for the Fridge, we thought that's
just not right he was good enough to knock $20 off the other one and I don't want it to be
jinxed. We went to Customer Service and the guy refunded the $16.95 back to our card
and then was suppose to ring up $69.95 but this time somehow the total was $51.95 + tax. As we were
walking across the parking lot we thought maybe he refunded the other money and just
took it off the $69.95 but that wasn't the case. This time I just let it go, we were tired and
had two buggies slam full of stuff to go with my son to college in 10 days. My wife said
we tried to do the right thing and they messed up twice.

Very gallant!
Most folks (especially here) would have run and made fun of the "Idiots" at Target.
Their second screwup was a reward for you being a good person.

"Near the day of Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky."
"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans."

The two reactions are not mutually exclusive. I believe many here would have called the mistake to their attention. And then they would have come her and called them idiots.

I have ended up being charged too little or received too much back quite a few times. I always bring it to their attention. Quite often they'll tell me not to worry about, but I only accept that if I know they're a manager or have similar authority. One time the checker said something about being new and basically being on probation at work and that being short that much would have cost him his job.

I figure life rewards me enough that I have no need to be on the "positive" end of such mistakes.

Now that is a very positive attitude. I applaud you. Good to know I'm not the only one!

I'm surprised at how often my attempt to be honest is met with sullen silence. Clearly I'm causing them trouble by not accepting the change they handed me.

The guy at Customer Service looked dumbfounded when I told him they under charged us.

I remember the look I got when I handed $10 back to the ticket seller at a movie because she gave me change from a $20 when I gave her a $10. The person behind me looked at me like I was a moron!

At least I felt better.

I was at a new Whole Foods the other day and was chatting with the cashier as she was ringing up my groceries. We got so involved with our conversation that she bagged the stuff up and told me to have a nice day. I had to tell her, "I will, especially since you didn't make me pay for these!"

I could have EASILY walked out of there without paying. I've been a cashier and I have a conscience. No way would I have ever left there without paying for my things.

The times I like are the ones where you have to argue with them to prove they made a mistake in undercharging because they don't believe it...

I purchased some lamps from Staple years ago. When I got home I found out I recieved eight more lamps than I paid for. I took the lamps back the next day. They seemed indifferent at my effort to do the right thing and I suspect I might have got some clerk in trouble if not fired. The moral here is sometimes doing the right thing causes more confusion.

A clerk handed me too much change at a Quicki gas stop and I didn't realize until I returned to the car. With all the cameras in the store I decided not to return the money because I was worried about the clerk being fired. But then I thought, well, her cash register is not going to balance...What do I do?...What do I do?...

They treated me like a criminal when I told my bank that I think my ATM withdrawal are coming out of somebody elses account. Doing the right thing sure can cause confusion sometimes.

I avoid Wal-Mart at all costs and will give all the other stores cashiers a break if I notice it soon enough. Back during the last Xmas season, I had a trainee cashier. Counting my change as I walked out the store I noticed that she rang me up for a couple of dollars less than it should have been. I got back in line after couple of other customers that looked like they were in a hurry and then had her fix it. It could be that she was not really made out to be a cashier, but I do not want to save $5 only to have it come out of the salary of someone making only a little more than that an hour.
