We're re-doing one of our bathrooms. The vanity is light maple. The pocket door hiding the washer and dryer is doug or red fir to match all the other interior doors (not stained yet). All the other doors in the house are stained cherry-ish. Do you think it would matter if it didn't match the vanity? The bathroom door itself is already the cherry-ish red fir, so it won't match. I don't really think that all the wood in a room has to match, but I'm not sure. All the molding matched the doors, but I am going to replace most of it with tile edging. kj.

I would prefer the door match the wood in the bathroom UNLESS it was clearly visable from outside the bathroom.

If you are installing all new trim in bathroom you could match inside of door and rest of trim to match vanity. Otherwise, match the door and trim to rest of the house.

P.S. There usually isn't a lot of trim in a bathroom so changing all of it isn't a lot of work. The vanity may be slightly different than existing so baseboard may need to be changed anyway.

That was my thought-- tie it together with some rest-of-the-wood-colored trim on the maple. Light maple and red/cherry can be a nice complement.

Man, I am such an aesthetic retard. I can't even understand what you guys are talking about, which tells me, at least, that I need some help.

My conundrum would seem to be that there are two doors in the bathroom, a pocket door that I just bought (hasn't been finished yet) to cover the washer and dryer and the door that goes into the bathroom, which looks like all the other doors in the house (cherry). Maybe we should have bought a different vanity, although I haven't seen any that would match the doors very well. I don't think one door can be stained light maple, and the other cherry. I wish they had something like garanimals for household decorating. kj.

What color is your molding and trim?

Is this the maple vanity you posted about? How about a pic of the bathroom?

You could strip the inside of bathroom door and then stain everything else inside Bathroom to match vanity. In your case, maybe just stain everything to match rest of house. Neither look is wrong. Six of one, half dozen of the other. The only one who will notice or care is you.

Sorry, I really should have just posted a couple pics, as it's too hard to imagine. Although you guys did pretty well, I would have to say. It might not have helped though, since the bathroom is a gutted mess right now.

At any rate, we're going to take the vanity back and get one that is closer to the color of the rest of the wood in the house. We'll then stain the pocket door to match that since it is right next to the vanity, and leave the door to the bathroom as is. You guys were really helpful, seriously. Thanks a bunch, kj.
