buy a replacement tip for power adapter?

I hate to throw the whole damned thing away for a lousy frayed wire, but it seems like these things are irreparable. Has anyone successfully soldered these connections - and with what? a new one or a kluged piece?

edit: typical ibook G4/PB adapter

Not worth the effort, just buy a new one...

yes, I know, I already have bought a new one (although a MacAlly model). But, it seems such a waste to just chuck that brick when it's only the end that is screwed up.

If you can locate a good connector end with a few inches of undamaged wire on it you can splice that into your brick's wire.
I did it many times when I worked at a Mac repair shop. We would end up with a ton of busted power adapters, just cut off the bad parts and put together the good parts. It was never a pretty repair and I wouldn't attempt to rely on that as a permanent solution, but for our purposes they were reliable. Just be sure to insulate the individual wires well to prevent a short and be careful not to stress the solder joints.

I've fixed a few of them the way Mike suggests. Definitely not pretty, and possibly a fire hazard.

I did this on one over a year ago and it is still working. When I stripped it back, there was enough of the original cord to splice, so I used the original plug. I put a piece of heat shrink about 2" long over the entire splice for protection and strain relief.

another splicer here, but to make it "prettier" I staggered the solder joints on the separate wires before double heat shrink tubing 'em w/ tape for strain relief in between the heat shrinks...
