Small hole in Pismo screen housing - burn from inside?

So i just noticed a small hole in the upper side of the screen housing on my Pismo that was definitely not there a few hours ago. Shining a flashlight in the hole (small - maybe 3-4 mm in diameter) shows a darkened spot, so i grabbed a wood toothpick and checked it out. A little bit of smoking from the hole convinced me that was a bad idea. No smoke smell, though. It sure looks like the hole was burned from inside. The seam between the screen side and the other side of the lid is a bit separated right at the burn, and this was not there earlier today. It's now powered off and unplugged with the lid up to disperse heat.

So, any idea why there would be any burning from *inside* the housing? And more to the point, any idea what I'm going to have to do to keep my trusty Pismo running? Does this call for a complete screen replacement, or would a smaller repair (that is hopefully less expensive) do the trick?

I've seen a few ccft do that just before they die.
melt and burn plastic right around the end of the tube.
