Flip4Mac vs. Windows Media Player 9

I recently downloaded the QuickTime Components for Windows Media (Flip4Mac) and still find it to be quirky. (I've tried it a couple of times in the past.) It plays alright but the player sometimes has double controls. The bar that shows how much has played sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Anyway, is there anything Flip4Mac plays that Windows Media Player 9 will not? It seems that the WMP 9 plays anything Flip4Mac does and, since I'm not using an Intel Mac, it doesn't seem to worth using.

So far, I haven't found anything that Flip4Mac will play that WMP 9 doesn't. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Michael

I think Flip4Mac works in conjunction "with" Windows Media Player to make it behave more like Quicktime. I think.

And while we're at it... make sure you have VLC in your arsenal. I find it sometimes plays things Flip4Mac/QT don't.

If you have QuickTime Pro you can save the things that you view with Filp4Mac because it translates the Windoze media to QuickTime.

Look in /Library/QuickTime and /Users/your-user-name/Library/QuickTime -- all you should have in one or the other is:

AppleIntermediateCodec.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
Perian.component

That combination will handle almost any media format without conflict.

Get Perian from [www.perian.org]

Once that's done, restart. There will definitely be no need for WMP and probably no need for VLC.
