Get Contacts/Addresses from iPod - how?

Somehow my files in my user/library directory got blown away. I don't know how, they were just gone. Maybe an update, or kids deleting files...I have no clue, but they are gone. I do have a backup, but its several months old. Then I remembered I have all my contacts and calendar on my iPod. Is it possible to get those off my iPod and restore the files on my computer? If so, how? My iPod is set to automatically update when I connect, so I'm not going to connect it until I figure this out.

edit:

Apparently: from the apple support page, I can
1) quit iTunes
2) connect iPod
3) drag the iSync.vcf file from iPod to desktop
4) import to Address book

I think iTunes automatically startsup when I connect my iPod.

So now the question is: How do I keep iTunes from starting when I connect my iPod and syncing?

2nd edit:

I went ahead and connected and watched the iTunes icon in the application bar to make sure it would not open. It did not. I recovered the files from iPod and all is good. Hope this helps if it happens to you. I had backups, but they were not up to date. So the iPod was a lifesaver.
