. . .some phones can be used as intercoms too. . .the radioshack deal that I listed here. . .(STF)

has the handsets at officemax Buy 1 get one free. . .I just got them but reading the box quickly, it mentioned using them as intercoms too. . .

Might be cheaper than an intercom? Maybe?

I was thinking the same thing as Newtom. We have a Siemens expandable phone system that lets you call each handset like an intercom. I don't like the phone system that much, but that is a good feature. Other systems have it, too.

Good idea, except not for rooms that do not have phone jacks. Don't want to have to wire, thus the reason for wireless intercoms. Only one room has a phone and that is the room that would be the "base".

the extra handsets don't need phone jacks. . .they only need power. It is wireless.

they are linked to the base phone.

Some phones will allow as many as 9 handsets. . .

That is what most people (me included) love about these new phones. . .you can use the extra handsets in room with no phone jack.

So how do those work? Just pick up the handset, push a button and it buzzes all handsets in the house OR does it allow you to speak without waiting for someone to answer like a regular intercom?

Thanks for your help by the way.

I think each handset is named after you register it to the base phone. .. .maybe handset 1, handset 2,

you can buzz just one or buzz them all (I'm sure how it works depends on the phone you use probably different for each manufacturer). . .I've only played with one but I remember reading a manual.

Then you just talk like you are on the phone. . .if the handset has speakerphone you can use that feature too. . .

Best to read the boxes of the phone you will be shoppin for. . .

Dang, I was hoping for suggestions. I like my current cordless phones and don't want to buy new ones. But I could use wireless intercoms.

The way our works is that each handset has a name like living room, office, etc. Each handset has an intercom button and you get a little menu that has each handset listed. You just pick the one you want and it has a special ring tone for intercom that is different from the phone ringer. Only the base station needs a phone connection. The other handsets need only an electrical outlet.

I've heard good things about Panasonic, but no personal experience. As I think I said, ours is a Siemens. It was complicated to set up, but once you get it programmed, it works well. I just don't like the handsets, so I wouldn't recommend Siemens.

Good luck, there are a lot of choices out there. Amazon usually has some good buyer's reviews that I have found helpful.

Well, I'll be checking into both, Pam. I'll post my findings and let you know what I decide. I'm not sure I like the idea of using a handset. I want to be able to yell "Supper" into the intercom with out fussing with buzzers. I want the herd to come into the barn with out having to run through out the house yelling like a town cryer.

That's exactly what I want it for Wolf. Get my daughter's attention w/o having to scream at the top of my lungs only to have to walk upstairs because she can't hear me due to TV or music. Or is ignoring me smiling smiley
