Hugs weren't allowed in my middle school (late 80's) either. No physical contact. In fact, I remember a friend and I got scolded for what was basically a "high five" as we passed each other in the hallway.

Well, if you allow hugging it will just lead to snogging which quickly becomes shagging. Gotta stop these fornicators in their tracks!

Ah yes, the old "No PDA" rule (which does NOT stand for Personal Digital Assistant, although Digits and @#$%& were often involved).

I wonder how good of a job these rules do on preventing teen pregnancies ?

good point you brought up. . .I searched and there is debate. . .but looks like your interpretation is the most common. . .learn something new everyday. . .

. . .It is debatable which letter represents which act. The most common interpretation assumes that X represents the four lips of a kiss and O the four arms of a hug. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary states that X is "used to represent a kiss, esp. in the subscription to a letter." . A less common interpretation assumes X as the crossed arms of a hug and O as the puckered lips of a kiss. Additionally, there is a more simple interpretation, based on the pronunciation of the letters X (sounds like 'kiss') and O (sounds like 'hold', as in 'I hold you'). . .

I wonder what will happen if some messed up kid ends up bringing a gun to that school and shoots someone. I would imagine that principal would change her mind pretty quickly.

I always thought the X was the hug and the O was the kiss. Because everyone writes it X then O, and they say it "hugs & kisses."

Even the wikipedia definitino as described above, says "hugs & kisses" and writes it X then O.

[en.wikipedia.org]

No one writes it ox ox ox ox. Well, unless they're referring to an ox. And does anyone say "kisses & hugs"?

that is why I thought the X was hugs but the above posted quote from wiki (that I posted) said there is debate. . .but the most common one says the O is the hugs <shrugs>

who knew?

Everyone likes to cite that dictionary, but I've seen it be wrong a few times before. The fact that the way people say it and write it don't line up with that definition, should be a strong indication there's something wrong with it.

Not likes this means much but-
[www.urbandictionary.com]
"the x's represent the hugs, and the o's represent the kisses"

I think if someone wants to say that the O's are the hugs and the X's are the kisses, they need to write it either Kisses & Hugs XOXOXO or Hug & Kisses OXOXOXOX

Why would one bother to write the words out if it's understood that that's what the symbols mean? That would be repeating oneself.

I don't think you write "hugs and kisses" under the XOXOXO. As N-OS X-tasy! (N-OXOXOS XOXOX-tasy!) says, the symbols should eliminate the need to write out the words.

I have always thought the Xs were the kisses. XOXOXOXO. But the expression is "hugs and kisses". Because I don't think they actually have anything to do with each other.

I'm not saying to write it out, I'm saying how it's referred to as.

If you write "XOXOXO" and think X = Kiss, you should say "Kisses & Hugs" Or, if you think X = Kiss, and want to say "Hugs & Kisses" you should write it as "OXOXOX"

If you read the story (or one that goes into more detail) you learn that this is actually about a new custom among teenage girls of huge group hugs that block the halls and go on for minutes. Nothing to do with PDAs or RichandAmy (Zits reference).

Silly rule.

If it's causing kids to be late to class, hold them accountable for being tardy.

If it's causing a blockage in the hallway, then tell them very loudly to move it and get to their next class.
