find an old HP 4, 5, or 6 "MP" series laserjet...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

If you're willing to go color, the Dell 3110cn supports USB 2.0 and ethernet and is PostScript Level 3. I have the predecessor the 3100cn and it works well for me.

If you want to stay mono, the Brother HL-5240 has PostScript emulation (BR-Script 3). I have an HL-1850 that uses the emulation and it works pretty well most of the time.

I had to add RAM to both printers to keep them from choking on files.

Another vote for Brother with BR-S3*.
{*BR-Script3 is PostScript®3 compatible}

You can get the REFURB HL-5250DN Network Laser Printer with Duplex direct from Brother for $159.99 shipped free. Full 1 Year Limited Warranty, same as new. Good Mac support from Brother too!
[www.brothermall.com]

Better yet, get it from Staples [www.staples.com] for $149.98 shipped free AND you get a FREE Refurb Brother QL-500 [www.staples.com] Label Printer too. And YES, the QL-500 is Mac compatible, got one right here next to my iMac eye popping smiley QL-500 OS X Software: [welcome.solutions.brother.com]

Sorta works out to getting the HL-5250DN for a Hundred Bucks!
ummmm, maybe I should post this as a Deal topic.

I find Brother's postscript emulation (at least in the printers I have, which are a couple/few years old) to be a touch flakely and quirky.

Xerox is the only name that comes to mind making printers with true Adobe postscript. It's rock solid. Even HP has switched to emulation. Unfortunately, their cheapest B&W printer with true Adobe postscript is about $1000. But, you can get a color laser from Xerox with true Adobe postscript for $400-$500 (6180N).

Laserwriter 4/600PS with a Sonic MicroPrint or Farallon iPrint adapter. Slow as hell but great quality output and cheap cheap cheap!

I'll second the mention of the Xerox 6180N. The output on this thing is GREAT - roughly every other time I print out a web page, I rave about how much I like the output. I don't know if it's the new toner or the genuine postscript, but I'm very, very, very happy with the output quality.

Yes, it's $500. But you're getting $500 worth of printer (for 2007). smiling smiley

Also, the Lexmark E250d reports "Postscript 3 compatibility" for $200-$300.
