Why wouldn't a MacBook start up from a Tiger install DVD?

Brand new MacBook 2.16 ghz core 2 duo, won't start up from the Tiger install DVD. When I go to the "Startup Disk" preference pane it does not list the Tiger DVD as an option even though the disk is read and RIGHT THERE ON THE FRIGGIN DESKTOP.

I am getting frustrated trying to rescuscitate my Quicksilver. Why won't the MacBook start from the DVD so I can install Tiger on the Quicksilver in Target Disk Mode?

retail Tiger install DVD?

None of them will boot an Intel Mac.

Is the whole reason why you're attempting this instead of just booting the Quicksilver from the DVD because the Quicksilver doesn't have a DVD drive?

If so, you might be able to put the MacBook in target disk mode and pop the DVD into it's drive, and make it act like a very expensive external DVD drive, and connect it to the Quicksilver and boot the Quicksilver from the Tiger install DVD and do the install.

I think the retail DVD is an older version than the DVD that ships with the MacBook. Macs almost never boot from a version older than shipped on the computer. The same thing would likely happen if you tried to boot a 1.67 GHz G4 PowerBook with a 10.3/Panther disk.

Ahhhhhh, cr^p. I hate Apple, I hate Steve Jobs, I hate Macintosh.

Thank you, everyone.

Why the bleeding hell won't a Tiger disk boot a Mac Book? Tiger is a Mac OS, yes? And a Mac Book is a Mac, yes? Good Gawd. A Mac OS disk should boot a Mac.

Thank you, all. What do I need to do to get a new copy of Tiger onto the Quicksilver? It won't boot by itself and it doesn't have a DVD drive, and I think that all I need is to copy over that orange micro extension. Thanks in advance.

Simple answer:

OSX Tiger was released April 29, 2005. At that point in time, all Macs were PowerPC based.

The first Intel Macs were released January 10, 2006.

An Intel Mac can't run a PowerPC version of OSX.

What Forrest said.

Same reason a MacBook won't boot from an OS 9 disk either.

GGD's suggestion should work. You might need to hold down 'option' when booting the Quicksilver to select the DVD to boot from.
