Leopard GUI rant
Posted by: miK.

I know it's been discussed but I had to rant.

The 3D dock... still not feeling it.
The semitransparent menu bar... why?
The stacks... how about something symmetrical and at right angles?

About the only thing I like in that pic is the wallpaper.
Of course, once I start using it, I will immediately fall in love with all of these features.

Even after using it for ages, I dislike the dock.

I don't like the leaning tower of icons and the "dock on a plate" isn't doing much for me either.

Sounds like you need to run Leopard on a computer with an iPhone-like touch screen.

It just seems odd to me, where the mindset ought to be...
"Wow - look at that cool, helpful feature XYZ!"

... but is instead thinking:
"I hope that feature XYZ can be turned off."

For those people out there already running Leopard (either developers or torrent leechers), how does the 3D dock work for people like me who have the dock on the side? Is it still 3D? And isn't there an option to make the stacks be straight instead of the leaning tower effect?

To borrow jargon from the draft era, sounds like for some the 3D is 4F.

It's clear the new finder is being built for a touch-based mac. Cover flow, etc

I still think Now Menus for OS 9 was way better than this dock for OS X.

I've seen screen shots (I think on Think Secret or 9to5) that showed the dock on the side. It looks really odd with the shelf. I don't know if that can be disabled on not. I use the dock on the side too and would prefer it to be 2D as well. I can do without some of the eye candy.

If you have parked it on the side of the screen, you're probably going to hate the new Dock. It's not designed to work properly anywhere other than the bottom of the screen and it's damned awkward anywhere else. When it's parked on the side, the shadows are all wrong and stacks spring out at odd angles. (Maybe the shadows have been fixed in the gold master, but I doubt it.)

BTW: You might think that the pile of icons in Stacks is annoying, but when Stacks grid popups obscure most of your screen, don't be surprised if you have to fight the urge to scream.

The menubar is fixable.

The Dock is only partly fixable for now with a transparent Dock hack, but I have hopes that TinkerTool and some other apps will offer some control over Stacks.

There is an option in Leopard for viewing Stacks in a Grid View.

I like the Grid view. It's a little awkward for traditional viewing, but you put your most often used files first, and they show up.

I thought that there is also the traditional list view, but I don't recall.

The two-step process of viewing the most often used files and then clicking on the arrow for more is a little off-putting for me, but I'll probably get used to it.

I didn't like the Leaning Tower of Files at all. It was fun to play with for a minute or two, but I like Grid view better.

Pretty, but a mess nonetheless.

Not nearly as fast/efficient as the old click/hold/list view.

Just remember that we all complained when the MultiFinder came out, and our Mac Pluses were so slow running more than one program at a time.

There will be hacks that come out to alter some of this behavior, especially if there are no built-in options.

I like the dock. I remember to discussions about it back when OS X was first released. I just don't understand the necessity to make it appear to be a shelf. The icons that reside on the doc are 2D so they want to dock itself to look 3D? That's goofy.

I hope removed icons 'fall' off the shelf instead of going 'poof'

that will lead to a few minutes of amusement...

Took me ages to get the Dock, but now I love it. The main thing for me was putting custom icon folders there, for easy access to the main stuff I need, from Work Projects, Templates, Favorites, and MostUsed Apps. It's my main launcher.

And yes, I like it more than QuickSilver. So shoot me.
