It seems as though there are several folks here who get a new iPod every time a new one is released. It just got me curious, that's all. I have (and rarely use):

512MB shuffle (not even sure if it still works)
1st gen 4GB MIni (dying, if not dead)

none.

my CD collection has quite a bit of dust on it, too.
I have 2 (two) iTunes on my desktop at home. Not exactly in a rush to store/archive them somewhere else. (I'd have to do the CDs, too.)

I had one.
I needed a graduation present for a nephew and it was sitting there unopened.

four if you count the iPhone.

iPhone 8gig the only one that really gets used daily
80gig iPod video to take over a friends or storage.
512mb shuffle (first gen) gym, riding or jogging in the rain.
30 gig (3/4gen firewire) normally gets used for booting machines or backing up.

own 5, use 2 or 3. I have:

3G iPod (20GB )
original shuffle
1st gen Nano
30Gb Video
iPod Touch

I don't use the 3G iPod at all anymore... I really need to try to sell it. Shuffle, I use at the gym, but will probably replace it with the nano. Used the 30GB video one until I recently got the Touch.

The only reason I have 5 though is that I got the shuffle, nano and video iPods at a clearance sale at the local Apple store when they were getting out of the refurb business. Apple had just decided that all returned items would go directly back to Apple and they'd no longer be selling them in-store. I got all 3 for $120.

Two (2G 10GB and 1G 2GB Nano) and I've never used either. My kids used them for a while and then bought their own. I'm not a music person and I really bought them for language lessons and audio books, but I just don't get around two it.

Two...

60GB video and a 512MB shuffle, use both (shuffle not quite as frequently)

My wife: Original (the real Classic?), she does not use, but still works fine, original Shuffle, doesn't use much, 2ndGen Shuffle, uses all the time, Gen5.5 Video, uses, but not as much, Touch, using more and more.
Me: 15gig Gen3 (I think), hooked up to the stereo at the studio, so used a lot when I'm not using it as a Firewire drive, original Shuffle, not much since I replaced it with a new Shuffle, I use it a lot when working around the house/garden, a Nano, 2ndGen that I tend to carry with all the time.
All are still working just fine.

I was thinking the same thing this morning... I have some ipod buildup as well...

But we have a good policy of ipod-inheritance in our family (we have 4 kids). They all get used... eventually.

Don't use it much at all, anymore, since I have a Treo that can play mp3s. It's not nearly as good an interface, but it keeps me from carrying one more thing to work.

1st gen 512 Shuffle - Stays in the garage connected to a pair of powered speakers. Bought refurbed for $50, I think

2nd gen Shuffle - Gym use. Christmas present. Died & swapped for a new one at Apple Store.

1st gen 2 gig Nano - Use for listening to French lessons while walking. Got it gratis from a CC rewards program

60 GB Photo. Hooked up to the stereo & goes to the boat on weekends. Bought refurbed. Died & swapped for another refurb at Apple Store (had AppleCare on it).

Sold or dead: 1st gen 512 shuffle. 30 GB click wheel (3rd gen?). Original 5 gig.

Also have my sister's 2nd gen 10 gig in a box upstairs. The headphone jack needs to be resoldered.


Want: a Touch with Bluetooth (A2DP support)

I just bought my 1st one earlier this year, a refurb 30GB video model. I use it when I am on the treadmill or on the bike and when I am in my car. It is great for listening to audiobooks on long car rides.

I don't think I have used it at home at all.

5. How did that happen?
512MB shuffle bought when it first came out, 2nd one used as a backup and was bought originally when the first one started acting weird, but now it works fine. I rotate them and keep them both in my gym bag in case one's battery dies.
2GB 1G Nano. Bought this as my car stereo iPod until my actual stereo got stolen. Fortunately I'd taken the iPod out.
60GB 5G. Used this for a long time as my commuting ipod and for traveling. It's now my home stereo iPod that sits in a soud dock.
8GB iPhone. My daily, commuting iPod.

All that and I still want a red shuffle and another Nano because the new ones are so cute.

So, that's about 70 ipods for 17 posters...or 4.1 per family unit.

Do we win anything?

A 20 gig 4g bought as a refurb that I use in the BR and for rolling sound
An identical model with a weak battery that I use for backup (made out of two bad 'pods) and at times to 'sync' two rolling systems
A 2 gig g1 black Nano that I use . . . basically for an iPod (usually on the bus).
Nano also an AS refurb. Owning multipls is not only for the "has to run out and get the latest" set.
