That price seems pretty high for what appears to be just run-of-the-mill PC components. You wouldn't find anything inferior in a Dull or Compaq for probably less. And why is this person buying a custom-built PC when it has nothing special to it?

billb,
Sorry, didn't mean to turn your stomach :-) I am merely trying to help a friend.

tahoedrew,
I agree with you 101%. However, my persuasion didn't work so it came to this :-(

Well, then my vote has to be ugly, but if your friend wants to throw his own money away - and apparently won't listen to your advice, I say let him do what he wants and plead ignorance when he begs you for help. Just FYI, I don't see a problem with PC's as many people need them (myself included as I use a Dull laptop and a dual 2.5GHz G5 tower at work - each is its own tool), but I do see a problem with people who think they need this or that latest technology or a custom-built machine for what will amount to be a word processor and web/email machine. But then, that's good marketing and easy suckers for you.

I'm not familiar with the motherboard, but the price seems a bit steep. The graphics card is very basic, the hard drive is small in today's environment of larger size files, networking, sound, modem cards can all be found very cheap, DVD burners have dropped considerably in price, etc.

He could probably do better looking at the sale ads for Fry's/Oupost.com/Newegg.com and doing it himself. If your friend can follow instructions, he can probably do it for several hundreds of dollars cheaper per PC.

Yeah, it's a bit pricey unless there's a really fancy LCD monitor behind that price. I've never heard of the MB before either and the vid card seems a bit out of date.

Either that list is incomplete or the price is too high.

Yeah,

This configuration looks like state of the art 2001 or 2002. P4 2.2? Do they still sell P4s that are slower than 2.8?

I think a minimum configuration for a custom PC should be

Athlon 64 3800+ or P4 3.2

200-250 GB hd

and a 256 MB video card.

This configuration can be had for probably as low as $450-$500.

Otherwise, go with a Dell or HP.

Yes, it sounds like yesterdays technology for todays price. The hard drive is Ultra/ATA not Serial ATA, the graphics card is AGP not PCIexpress, the processor is slow (is that a socket 478 chip?) ...

Bottom line, what he is building is not going to be readily upgradable to current technologies.

Ok, guys, the information you're providing is all that I need as a last attempt to persuade my friend to go for a Dell. Thanks!

At least you should have your friend look at what a comparable price will get you in Dell.

Remember, Dell puts out coupons all the time which allows you to upgrade to better specs for the same price.

Very high...very. Hopefully he isn't going through with the deal, or can cancel it altogether.

Who is doing the building? Your friend is getting raped...er, robbed.

Not even a DVD-burner for that price...and a 2.5Ghz P4?

The graphics card is nothing to be desired either.

I feel bad for your friend.

The following is the latest from my friend. The previous specs were incorrect. What are your thoughts this time? Each PC costs her $650 including taxes.

It's still a slow CPU, using the older socket 478. Still no PCIexpress graphics slot.

What are they using these PC's for?
