Why? If you have a 720p TV what dif would it make if your player can't output 1080p? It's just going to have to downscale or interlace anyway. Now if you have a 1080p set I agree buying a 1080i player is a waste, but that is maybe 10% of all HDTV owners at this point. The real downside of HD DVD right now is that the only way to rent the disks is online. You can pick up Blu-Ray @ Blockbuster.

The idea is that you buy up, because at some point you will have a 1080p TV. No point in upgrading both. I had a CD player before I had CD's, I had a DVD drive in my Wallstreet before I had DVDs. Always better to overcompensate, lol.

That is really an elusive concept w/ the fast pace of electronics updates now. In the course of a few years we've gone from component to DVI to HDMI connectors. Even HDMI has evolved from 1.0 to 1.3a (and the version you have can make a difference, and 1.3b is coming soon). Blu-Ray has gone from version 1.0 to 1.1 at the end of the month (1.1 players will play BR disks w/ extra features).

So I see no reason to pay for a top end machine today if I can't use it's features today. I'd rather buy the player that matches the TV I have today. When I get a better TV I'll get a better player if need be. In the end, electronics go down in price and up in features over time so there is no reason to "buy up."

But there in is the point, it isn't a high end machine, it's a low end entry $199 HD DVD player, not a $700 Toshiba.

Yes, but I got the impression from your first post that you advocated "buying up." Now you seem to be OK with a measly 1080i player.

With a quality TV (with a good de-interlacer), 1080i should be fine. OTOH, if you spend money for a quality TV, why go for a lower-grade player?

My point was that you can get an HD-DVD player with 1080p output for not much more than this $199 one with 1080i. That and so many new TV's are 1080p so getting a 1080i player would be a simple waste.

If you already have a 720p TV then I don' t think there would be a big enough difference over standard DVD to justify spending $200 on a new player and all new discs.
