Well, the iPod nano that I probably will buy has one problem.

It was engraved with their name and phone number. Not a big deal, but not pleasing nontheless.

The thing is, "was". It looks as though he pretty much went to scratch it off, and while most of the engraving is no longer there, tons of scratches remain.

Is there anything I could do short of buying a new back casing to polish it up and make it look fine?

Are they chrome plated or stainless steel? If it's chrome, you're out of luck. If it's stainless, you can polish it out with the proper tools.

I would pass on this one Chip. I don't think you would ever really get it all out with polishing, but that is just my opinion. I haven't actually tried it with a Nano.

After some searching I believe it's Stainless Steel.


The scratches don't appear to be mega deep, but they are still there.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Just put it in a case/cover

Get some steel wool and make the whole back case brushed.

I was thinking of that.

I'm not sure how it'd all turn out. The scratches are deep enough to take out the engraving and I can feel the with my fingernail.

Why would anyone scratch the crap out of it?
It would have sold better if it wasn't scratched.

You can get the scratches out, but they are very deep, by the time you get them out, the metal might be too thin. If you want to pursue the scratch removal, look for tips on the web for removing scratches from stainless steel car trim. A new back will be cheaper.

It wasn't hot. That was my big concern especially since he even had paint on it.

I can still read most of the engraving, just not clearly. It is his name, and I see no reason why someone would get an iPod and engrave it with someone elses name.



I havn't handed over the money yet, but that doesn't mean I can ruin it.

Is there anything that I can try?

So you're sitting on someone else's tainted goods. What a stupid thing to do! Why in the world would that person deface the back so carelessly...makes me wonder *how* he treated the Nano.

Did you make sure it works fine?

I don't know about this one 'Chip. If that were a cell phone and I was you advising me to buy it or not, I'd definitely say Pasadena on it.

It Works fine. Visually, it's not bad, but it needs some polishing.

I just did a bit, brasso + hand and finally dremel.

It's the scratches that are over the engraving.

It's also the fact that it's his name that's engraved, if it was something like w00t! I'd go for it.


Arrg. For $150, I'm not sure.

Walk away... you already have a 5 gig iPod... I'm sorry, but really, just wait until you can get a 4 gig refurbished for $150-$200 w/ 1 year warranty.

Last resort is to buy a cool case for it so you can't see the back.
