I finally had time to re-seat the drive in my husband's failed Macbook - no dice, so a new drive is in order.

This computer get only light, occasional use, so no need to go way overboard on size or speed - reliability is highest priority.

Thoughts?

any SATA 2.5" in your budget -- larger faster drive might speed a few things up

if its still under warranty (1 year) you might get a replacement for free, i did

fwiw, i thought the same way -- "60 gigs is plenty" for my wifes macbook -- since she hardly does anything -- and bingo -- only about 15 gigs left...

Unfortunately not still under warranty - and evidently the ONLY laptop I've ever owned w/o applecare!

I know Seagate was at one time the most reliable - still?

Choices at NewEgg seem to be Hitachi, Fujitsu, WD and Samsung.

Samsung runs too hot. The fan is always on.

Avoid Seagate Momentus--some of the models have had an epidemic of failures. I'd check www.barefeats.com

WD 250GB here. Fantastic and around $150 in the USB version (pop it open and take out the drive).

I 2nd bluesubaru. Get the WD 250GB drive in the USB case for $150, break the case open and swap with your current drive.

I'd be interested in selling the 120Gb drive I just took out of my macbook pro. $50 inc. shipping sounds fair to me. (I just upgraded to a 250GB drive myself)
