Why do cockerels crow? I know that crowing to herald the dawn is a fallacy but what makes a cockerel crow over and over and over and over and over...........

Someone down the road must keep chickens and this b****y thing can start up at 5 in the morning and then during the day will have several hour long sessions where it crows every 10 seconds. You would think it would get exhausted but unfortunately not.

I assume it has something to do with sex, it always is. I also am wondering if there is another younger cockerel around and this noisy one is crowing to show who is boss. Is that how it works?

We are not the nearest and it must be driving its neighbours mad. I expect to hear gunshot fairly soon.

Kept chickens when I lived in California, it was my understanding that @#$%& crowed as a proclamation of territory. They didn't just do it just in the morning, anytime during daylight hours it seemed. I got used to it very quickly, then again I had just moved from Kilburn so I was used to noisy, lol.

When my neighbor's son way in an agricultural program, he kept chickens and one rooster. The rooster would crow anytime EXCEPT at dawn. It didn't particularly bother me. Much less offensive that loud kids.

Dunno. When we watched the neighbor's chickens while they wintered in FL, the rooster used to swoop on us when we went into the henhouse to collect the eggs. My mother in law used to carry a broom like a flyswatter- knocked him into a wall so hard one morning that his cock-a-doodle-do sounded wobbly for a few days.

The hens finally hatched a replacement rooster, and when he was of the chicken Age of Consent, the attack rooster made a great soup. One of the few times I've actually eaten something out of a sense of revenge.

Any critter gets me up at 5am, I'll eat it's young as a warning...

Fortunately my cat has no children....
