Hey everybody,
I know everyone despises the new guy but my dad always reffered me to this site for help. so nehoo, i just uploaded the leopard software and was excited to learn about the boot camp feature. Being a college kid Im beat senseless by the inability to run certain forestry programs like FVS and ArcGIS that the school offers to the students. I was wondering about what requirements i should get to A. get a windows OS running and B. being a college kid with little money, if I could "use" another students windows CD to upload on the mac. any info on either would help. Thanx!!

Legal questions about "borrowing" a "spare" windows CD aside... the trouble is the Windows "Activation" still needs to be done, and will detect that it's running on more than one computer.

However, if you should stumble on an "OEM" CD for considerably cheaper than a retail copy of Windows, they work just fine.

There may be ways around the Windows activation, but I'm not aware of any...

Did you install Flip4Mac? You need this to watch many wmp and avi video formats.

You might want to check with your university's computer lab/IT dept to see if they have a University license for Windows XP or Vista. I have one from Emory that allows it to be used on unlimited computers and does not require formal registration.

Thanx for the speedy response!! Our university allows only engineering majors to get the windows for free but i will check my college to see if they do that for us.
btw, i do have flip4mac but its something weird with existing divx files. they work fine with the front row application but not on the stand alone divx player for some reason.

Thanx once again!!

There's a divx bug somewhere in the library/application support folder. I saw a note on either macfixit or more likely macosxhints.com.

Boot camp works great. Fusion also works well. I use Windows sparingly but it is handy.

Good luck!

As Henny Youngman's doctor might say, 'Don't use the standalone DivX Player!'
